    Beyond the puzzle

A word search is a warm-up. Let AI build the rest of the lesson.

These AI skills plug into Claude, ChatGPT or any AI chat and turn the same word list into worksheets, flashcards and quizzes you can print.

How to use this word search generator

This free word search generator turns any list of words into a printable puzzle with a separate answer key. Type or paste your words, choose a difficulty, and the grid is built in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded, so you can use student names or a private spelling list without a second thought.

    1. Add your words. One per line or separated by commas. Spaces and punctuation are removed inside the grid, so "ice cream" becomes ICECREAM, while the word list on the sheet keeps your original spelling.
    2. Pick a difficulty. Easy places words only left to right and top to bottom. Medium adds diagonals. Hard uses all eight directions, including backwards.
    3. Choose a grid size or leave it on Auto. Auto picks a grid that fits your longest word and leaves room for the rest.
    4. Print or save as PDF. The puzzle prints on the first page and the answer key on the next one. The sheet fits both US Letter and A4 paper.

    Choosing the right difficulty

The same word list can work for a six year old and for a high school class. What changes is the direction of the words, the size of the grid and the filler letters around them.

    Early readers

Use Easy, a small grid (8x8 to 10x10), 6 to 10 short words and uppercase letters. Children at this stage scan left to right, so forward-only words keep the puzzle about recognising the word, not about hunting in every direction.

    Grades 3 to 6

Medium with a 12x12 to 15x15 grid is a good default. Diagonals make the search more interesting without being frustrating. Ten to twenty words fill the grid nicely.

    Older students and adults

Hard mode places words backwards and in every direction. Switch filler letters to Tricky: instead of random A-Z, the empty cells are filled with letters taken from your own words, so partial matches appear everywhere. For an extra challenge, hide the word list and give a clue sheet instead.

Make it a real learning activity

A word search is fun, but on its own it mostly practises visual scanning. A few small changes turn it into vocabulary work:

    • Ask students to write a definition or a sentence for each word they find.
    • Hide the word list and give definitions instead. Students have to work out the word before they can find it.
    • Use this week's spelling words and ask students to copy each word as they circle it.
    • Group words by theme (planets, parts of a cell, fall vocabulary) and finish with a short discussion.

If you plan whole units, the free lesson plan generator helps you place the puzzle inside a lesson, and the rubric generator builds a simple checklist if the puzzle is part of a graded task. More ideas for using AI in class are on teaching with AI.

What the generator checks for you

    • Words that do not fit. If a word is longer than the grid, or the grid is too full to place it, you get a clear message and a suggestion to make the grid bigger.
    • Duplicates. Repeated words are listed once. If one word sits inside another, such as CAT inside CATERPILLAR, you get a warning because students may find it twice.
    • Accidental extra copies. After filling the empty cells, the generator searches the grid again and re-rolls the filler letters if a word appears more than once.
    • Repeatable puzzles. Every puzzle has a short code. Type the same code with the same words and settings and you get the same grid, which is handy for make-up work or a second class period.

    FAQ

Is this word search generator free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on puzzles. Everything runs in your browser and your words are never sent to a server.

How many words can I put in one puzzle?

Up to 60 words. For a printable sheet, 10 to 25 words is the sweet spot. If some words cannot be placed, the tool tells you which ones and suggests a larger grid.

Can I print the answer key separately?

Yes. With the answer key option on, the puzzle prints on page one and the key, with every word highlighted, prints on page two. Turn the option off to print only the puzzle.

Will the puzzle fit on A4 and Letter paper?

Yes. The sheet is sized to fit inside the printable area of both US Letter and A4, so you do not need to change any setting. Choose Save as PDF in the print dialog to keep a file.

Can I make the same puzzle again later?

Yes. Each puzzle has a code shown under More options and in the sheet footer. Enter the same code with the same words and settings and the grid comes out identical.
