Position matters: -ss before -i seeks the input, -ss after -i decodes and discards up to that point. · Stream selection: by default ffmpeg picks one video and one audio stream. -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 says exactly which. -map 0 takes everything. · Codecs: -c:v and -c:a choose encoders. -c copy copies streams without re-encoding: fast and lossless, but it can only cut on keyframes and cannot apply filters. · Filters: -vf for a simple video chain, -af for audio, -filter_complex when there are several inputs or outputs.
