How to Use Claude as a Career Coach: Skill Maps, a 90-Day Plan, Salary Talks

Claude makes a useful career coach once you switch off its instinct to encourage you. It is good at the structured parts of coaching: an honest inventory of what you are good at and what you will not do again, a career change mapped as several small moves, a 90-day plan with evidence at the end, and a salary conversation you can rehearse. It is weak on live market data and cannot open doors for you.

Where do you start?

With an inventory, not a goal. Most people ask "should I change careers?" before they know what they are optimising for. Make Claude interview you first.

Act as a career coach running a first session. Do not give advice yet. Ask me questions one at a time, up to 12 in total, to understand: - what work gives me energy and what drains me (ask for specific recent examples) - what I am measurably good at, with evidence - what I will not do again, and why - what I am paid now and what matters more or less than money right now - constraints: location, time, family, savings runway After the last question, summarise in 6 bullet points what I am actually optimising for, and name one contradiction in my answers.

The contradiction is the useful part. "I want stability" next to "I am bored after a year in any role" is the real conversation.

Works on direction: an inventory of what you are good at and will not do again, the evidence your manager needs for a promotion, a change of field mapped as three moves, and for pay a number, a range and the sentence to say after it. Includes Career Transition and Managing Up modules.

How do you plan a career change without one big leap?

Career changes fail most often as one jump: quit, retrain, apply, discover the new field is not what you imagined. Map it as three moves instead.

I want to move from [CURRENT ROLE / FIELD] to [TARGET ROLE / FIELD]. 1. Write the move in one sentence. 2. Make a translation table: things I have done (I will list them below) -> how the target field would describe them -> the proof I could show. 3. List the real gaps, in order of how often they appear in job ads for the target role. 4. Suggest 2 bridge roles that use my current strengths and build the biggest gap. 5. Write the questions I should ask two people who do the target job now, so I learn what the work is actually like before I move. My experience: [BULLETS]

Do the two conversations before anything else. They cost an hour each and they are the cheapest test you will ever run on a career change.

How do you build a 90-day plan?

Build a 90-day plan for this goal: [GOAL]. Time available: [HOURS PER WEEK]. Split into three 30-day blocks. For each block: - one outcome I can show someone at the end (a project, a certificate, a portfolio piece, a conversation completed) - the weekly actions that get me there - one sign that the plan is not working, and what I change if I see it Keep it realistic for my hours. If the goal does not fit in 90 days at this pace, say so and shrink it.

How do you rehearse a salary negotiation?

First get the number from outside the chat: current job ads that list pay, salary surveys, people in the role. Then use Claude for the case and the rehearsal.

I am negotiating pay for [ROLE] at [COMPANY TYPE]. Market data I found: [RANGE AND SOURCES]. My evidence: [3-5 results with numbers]. 1. Help me choose a target number and a walk-away number, and explain the reasoning. 2. Write the exact two sentences I say when I name the number, and the sentence I say after it (then I stop talking). 3. Play a tough hiring manager. Push back three times: budget, internal equity, "we do not negotiate". Wait for my reply each time. 4. After the role play, tell me where I gave ground too early.

Say your lines out loud. A number you have only typed is much harder to say to a person.

Where does Claude fall short as a career coach?

  • It does not know the current market. Salary figures and "hot skills" from memory are often out of date.
  • It agrees too easily. Ask it to argue against your plan, every time.
  • It cannot introduce you to anyone. Most career moves still happen through people.
  • It forgets. Keep your inventory and plan in a Claude Project or a document and paste it back in.
  • It is not therapy. If work stress is affecting your health, talk to a professional.

Need more than one specialist?

A career move touches the CV, the cover letter, interviews and the salary talk. Library puts every skill, prompt pack and agent in the catalog (2,500+) inside Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex or Cursor through one connector: you ask for a specialist by name and it loads. It is $9 a month or $59 a year, with a free trial, no card needed. Why a subscription beats buying files · See plans

How do you install a career coaching skill in Claude?

A KissMySkills skill is a ZIP file with a SKILL.md at its root. In the Claude desktop app, open Customize → Skills, add a skill, upload the ZIP and toggle it on. Skills need code execution enabled, under Settings → Capabilities. If the Skills menu is not available on your plan, or you work in ChatGPT or Gemini, open the SKILL.md in a text editor and paste it into a Claude Project, a custom GPT or a Gemini Gem instead.

The other route skips files altogether: connect KissMySkills once and ask for the specialist by name in the chat you already use. That is how Library works, and it is covered in the box above.

In summary:

Start with an honest inventory, map a career change as three moves, plan in 90-day blocks and rehearse the salary conversation out loud. For the full coaching method in one file, the AI Career Coach ($19). For CVs, cover letters and more, the AI career generators collection.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can Claude be a career coach?+

Claude can do much of what a coach does in a session: ask structured questions, reflect patterns back, challenge vague goals and help you plan. It cannot know your industry's hiring market in real time, introduce you to people or hold you accountable over months. Use it for thinking and planning, and use people for introductions and reality checks.

How do I use Claude to change careers?+

Map your current skills into the language of the target field, list the gaps, and look for a bridge role that uses your existing strengths while building the missing ones. Then test the move with two conversations with people who do the target job before you commit. Claude is good at the mapping and at preparing those conversations.

Can Claude help me negotiate salary?+

Yes, for preparation and rehearsal: building your case, choosing a number and a range, and practising the exact sentences with Claude playing a tough hiring manager. It cannot tell you the market rate reliably, so get salary data from current job ads, salary surveys or people in the role.

How do I stop Claude from just telling me what I want to hear?+

Tell it so directly. Ask it to argue against your plan, to name the three most likely reasons it fails, and to rate how strong your evidence is. Ask what is missing rather than whether your idea is good.

What is a 90-day career plan?+

A plan that breaks a career goal into actions for the next three months: what to learn, who to talk to, what to build or ship as evidence, and how you will know it is working. Ninety days is long enough to show progress and short enough to change course.
