How to Rank in ChatGPT: A Practical Guide for 2026

To rank in ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI's search crawler can read your site, state clearly who you are and what you offer, answer the questions buyers actually ask, and get mentioned on the third-party sites ChatGPT already trusts. There is no secret ranking formula and no tag that guarantees a mention. What works is a short list of steps, most of which are good SEO with a few AI-specific checks on top.

This guide covers how ChatGPT picks sources, six practical steps to optimize for AI search, what llms.txt does and does not do, and how to measure the result. We separate what is evidenced from what is hype. We make an AI SEO tool that checks crawler access, schema and AI visibility. We say where it helps and where other work (PR, reviews) will matter more.

How ChatGPT picks sources

ChatGPT answers come from two places:

  1. The model's training data. What the model learned before its cutoff. You cannot edit this directly; it reflects how often and how consistently your brand was described across the web.
  2. Live web search. For many questions, especially about products, prices, local businesses and recent events, ChatGPT searches the web, reads a handful of pages and cites them. This is the part you can influence most quickly.

For live search, ChatGPT needs to find your page in a search index, be allowed to fetch it, and find a clear, quotable answer on it. It also tends to prefer sources that other sources agree with: review sites, well-known publications, directories, forums and comparison articles. That is why "how to get mentioned by ChatGPT" is as much a PR question as an SEO one.

What works, at a glance

Action Effort Evidence level How to check
Allow OAI-SearchBot and other AI crawlers Low Strong: OpenAI documents that blocking it removes you from ChatGPT search Read robots.txt; run an AI crawler check
Be indexed in Bing as well as Google Low Good: ChatGPT search draws on third-party search indexes Bing Webmaster Tools
Clear entity info and Organization schema Low to medium Good: helps engines connect facts to your brand Schema validator
Answer-first pages for real questions Medium Good: pages with direct answers get quoted Ask ChatGPT the question; see what it cites
Third-party mentions and reviews High Strong: AI answers lean on sources others trust Look at which sites get cited in your category
llms.txt file Low Weak: no major engine has confirmed it affects citations Optional; check it exists and is accurate

Step 1: make sure AI crawlers can read your site

This is the step most often missed, and the easiest to fix. OpenAI uses separate crawlers for different jobs, and its documentation is clear about what each does:

  • OAI-SearchBot is used to show websites in ChatGPT's search features. If you block it, your pages will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
  • GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it opts you out of training; it is a separate decision from search.
  • ChatGPT-User fetches pages on demand when a user asks ChatGPT to open a link or act on their behalf.

Many sites blocked "AI bots" in 2023 and 2024 with a broad robots.txt rule or a firewall setting and never revisited it. Check three things:

  1. Your robots.txt does not disallow OAI-SearchBot (and, if you want visibility elsewhere, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and similar).
  2. Your CDN or firewall (Cloudflare and others have one-click AI bot blocking) is not returning a block or a challenge page to these crawlers.
  3. Your important content is in the server-rendered HTML. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so text loaded only by scripts may be invisible to them.

Our free AI SEO audit checks robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, and whether those crawlers actually receive your page, which catches firewall blocks that robots.txt alone does not show.

One more cheap safeguard: make sure you are indexed in Bing, not only Google. ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers, and Bing has long been reported as one of them. Submitting your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools takes ten minutes.

Step 2: clear entity information and schema

AI engines need to know, without guessing, who you are. Make the basics unambiguous:

  • A plain About page: business name, what you do, where you operate, who runs it, how long you have been around.
  • Consistent facts everywhere: the same name, address, phone, prices and product names on your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Conflicting facts make engines hedge or skip you.
  • Organization or LocalBusiness schema in JSON-LD with your name, logo, URL, contact details and sameAs links to your official profiles.
  • Product, Service or Article schema on the relevant pages, with prices and dates that match what is visible.

Schema does not make ChatGPT mention you by itself. It removes ambiguity, which helps every engine, classic or AI, connect the right facts to your brand. If you want help writing it, see our guide to schema markup generators.

Step 3: answer real questions on your pages

AI search engines quote passages that answer a question directly. Pages that bury the answer under 400 words of introduction get skipped. To optimize for AI search:

  • Collect real questions. Use your sales calls, support emails, Google Search Console queries and "People also ask" boxes. Write them down in the customer's words.
  • Answer first. Put a one or two sentence answer right under the heading, then the detail. (This article does the same.)
  • Be specific. Prices, ranges, timelines, who it is for and who it is not for. Vague marketing copy is hard to quote.
  • Use clear structure. Headings that match questions, short paragraphs, lists and tables for comparisons.
  • Keep facts current. Add "last updated" dates to pages with prices or specs, and actually update them.

If you need to plan this at scale, our guide to an AI SEO content strategy shows how to build a year of question-led content in one session, and our comparison of AI SEO writing tools covers the tools for drafting it.

Step 4: earn third-party mentions

This is the step with the biggest effect for most businesses, and no on-site tool, including ours, does it for you. When ChatGPT answers "what is the best X for Y", it often leans on sources such as:

  • Review platforms and marketplaces relevant to your category.
  • Comparison and "best of" articles from established publications.
  • Industry directories and associations.
  • Forums and community threads, including Reddit.
  • Local press and trade press.

Practical moves: ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms that get cited in your category, pitch your product to the writers of the comparison articles AI keeps citing, get listed in the directories that matter, and take part honestly in community discussions. PR and review work often moves AI mentions more than any on-page change.

The quickest way to find your targets: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your buyers' top ten questions and write down every source they cite. That list is your outreach plan.

Step 5: llms.txt — what it does and doesn't do

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that lists your most important pages with short descriptions, meant to help language models find and read your content. It is easy to create and does no harm.

What it does not do, as of October 2026: no major AI search engine has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to decide what to cite, and Google representatives have said publicly that Google Search does not use it. So treat it as optional housekeeping, not a ranking factor. If an agency sells llms.txt as the key to AI rankings, be sceptical.

We publish one ourselves because it is cheap and helps AI agents that do read it navigate the site. Do the same if you like, but do Steps 1 to 4 first.

Step 6: measure your AI visibility

You cannot see what millions of users ask ChatGPT, so measurement is always a sample. Three levels:

  1. Manual, free. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google your buyers' top ten to twenty questions. Record whether you are mentioned, in what position, and which sources are cited. Use a clean, logged-out session where you can. If you are wondering how to check if your site is in AI Overviews, this is the simplest way: search the same questions in Google and look at the sources listed in the AI Overview.
  2. Readiness monitoring. Check weekly that AI crawlers still get your pages and that your schema and llms.txt are intact. Site changes and firewall updates break this quietly. Our AI SEO tools do this on All-Access.
  3. Prompt tracking. Dedicated trackers run a fixed panel of prompts daily across engines and report mentions, share of voice and citations. We compared them in our guide to the best AI visibility tools. For ongoing measurement at scale, these dedicated trackers are the better choice than our lighter check.

Also watch your analytics for referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. It is small for most sites today, but it is real traffic you can attribute.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident while trying to block training crawlers. Treat search and training bots as separate decisions.
  • Chasing one prompt. AI answers vary run to run. Judge progress over weeks and over a set of questions.
  • Publishing thin AI-written pages at scale. Engines quote pages with specific, first-hand information, not rewrites of what already exists.
  • Inconsistent facts. Old prices on one page, new prices on another, a different business name on a directory.
  • Hiding content behind scripts, logins or pop-ups. If a crawler cannot read it, it cannot cite it.
  • Paying for tricks. There is no tag, file or prompt injection that makes ChatGPT recommend you. Anyone promising guaranteed AI rankings is selling a guess.

Where KissMySkills fits

Our AI SEO tools cover Step 1, Step 2 and part of Step 6: a page audit for classic SEO and structured data, an AI search visibility check (robots.txt rules for AI crawlers, whether they actually get your page, llms.txt, schema, FAQ markup), and a fix list in order of impact. If you connect Claude or ChatGPT through the KissMySkills MCP connector, your own agent can run the check and write a fix plan with our SEO skills.

They do not do Step 4 (mentions and reviews) and do not track how often ChatGPT names you. The one-off check is free; weekly monitoring and alerts are part of the All-Access subscription at $15 a month or $129 a year, together with the other KissMySkills AI tools.

FAQ

How do I get mentioned by ChatGPT?

Allow OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) to access your site, make your business facts clear and consistent with schema, answer real buyer questions directly on your pages, and earn mentions on the review sites, directories and publications that ChatGPT already cites in your category. There is no way to guarantee a mention, but these steps raise the odds.

How do I optimize for AI search?

Start with access: check robots.txt and your firewall so AI crawlers can fetch your pages, and keep key content in server-rendered HTML. Then add clear entity information and schema, write answer-first pages for real questions, keep facts current, and build third-party mentions. Measure monthly with manual checks or a tracker.

Does ChatGPT use SEO?

Indirectly, yes. When ChatGPT searches the web it relies on search indexes and pages it can crawl, so crawlability, indexing, clear structure and authority still matter. But AI answers also weigh third-party mentions and how clearly a page states facts, so SEO alone is not enough.

Does llms.txt help you rank in ChatGPT?

There is no confirmed evidence that it does. llms.txt is an optional file that lists your key pages for language models. It is cheap and harmless, but no major AI search engine has confirmed it as a citation factor, so do it after the basics.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?

Fixing crawler access can take effect within weeks once your pages are re-crawled and indexed. Earning third-party mentions and changing how AI describes your brand usually takes months, and changes to the model's built-in knowledge only arrive with new model versions.

Bottom line

Ranking in ChatGPT is not a new discipline so much as good SEO plus three extra checks: AI crawler access, clear entity facts, and presence on the sources AI trusts. Start with the part you can verify in a minute. Run the AI-search visibility check on your site, part of our SEO tools, then work through the steps above in order.
