The best Semrush alternative for most small businesses is not one tool but a smaller stack: a free crawler or audit tool, a cheap rank tracker, and Ahrefs or Semrush only for the month you actually need keyword and backlink data. Semrush is excellent, but plenty of owners and freelancers pay $139 a month or more and use maybe a tenth of it. If that is you, a Semrush alternative for each job you really do will usually cost less and work just as well.
This guide maps the four or five jobs people actually use Semrush for, shows current Semrush pricing and Ahrefs pricing, compares Semrush vs Ahrefs, and lists the cheapest tool per job. We make one of the tools on this list, the KissMySkills AI SEO tools. We say where it fits and where it does not, and it does not replace a keyword database or a backlink index. Prices checked October 2026.
Why people look for Semrush alternatives
The reasons we hear most often are simple:
- Price. The entry SEO plan is a real monthly cost for a five-person business, and extra users cost more.
- Unused features. Semrush covers SEO, ads research, content, local, social and now AI search. Most small teams log in to check rankings and run an audit, and that is it.
- One job only. A freelancer may need deep keyword research twice a year for a site launch, not every month.
- Complexity. There are so many reports that new users do not know which numbers matter.
None of this means Semrush is a bad product. It means the bundle is sized for marketing teams and agencies, and many buyers are neither.
Semrush pricing in 2026
Here is Semrush pricing as listed on its own pricing page when we checked in October 2026. Semrush now sells combined "SEO + AI search" plans.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) | Main limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 1 demo project, 10 reports a day |
| SEO | $139 | $117.33 | 5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily |
| Starter | $199 | $165.17 | 5 websites, 500 keywords, 50 AI prompts tracked |
| Pro+ | $299 | $248.17 | 15 websites, 1,500 keywords, 100 AI prompts |
| Advanced | $549 | $455.67 | 40 websites, 5,000 keywords, 200 AI prompts |
Extra users start at $45 a month each. Enterprise is custom. Semrush changes its plan names and limits often, so check the page on the day you buy.
If you already pay for Semrush, it is worth reading our breakdown of which Semrush AI features actually work before you cancel. Some teams find they only need to use it differently, for example by having Claude analyse Semrush exports instead of clicking through reports.
Semrush vs Ahrefs (and Ahrefs pricing)
Ahrefs is the other big all-in-one tool, and the first thing most people compare against. The honest answer to "which is better, Semrush or Ahrefs?" is that both are strong, and the difference is emphasis:
- Ahrefs is known for its backlink index and clean interface. Many SEOs reach for it first for link research and competitor content gaps.
- Semrush is broader. It adds PPC and ads research, local listings, content tools and more marketing features around the core SEO data.
- Keyword data is good in both. Numbers differ between them because each uses its own model; neither is "the true" search volume.
Ahrefs pricing, as listed on its own pricing page in October 2026:
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) | Main limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29 | n/a | Basic competitive research and search volumes |
| Lite | $129 | $107.25 | 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 1 user |
| Standard | $249 | $206.75 | 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords |
| Advanced | $449 | $372.75 | 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords |
| Enterprise | $1,499 | annual only | API, SSO and more |
Ahrefs also sells Brand Radar AI, its AI-search visibility product, starting at $199 a month, and offers free site data and audit tools for verified site owners. If you are looking for an Ahrefs alternative because of price, everything below applies to you as well: most of the cheaper tools replace Ahrefs and Semrush for the same jobs.
Alternatives by job
Start by writing down what you actually opened Semrush for in the last three months. Then pick the cheapest tool per job.
Keyword research
This is where the big platforms are hardest to replace. Their keyword databases, difficulty scores and SERP history are the product.
- Google Keyword Planner is free with a Google Ads account. Volumes come in ranges unless you run ads, but it is Google's own data. We compared it with AI keyword tools in this guide.
- Google Search Console shows the queries you already get impressions for. For an existing site, that is often the most useful keyword list you will ever see.
- Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month gives basic search volume and competitive research if you need a third-party number.
- SE Ranking includes keyword research in its plans at a lower entry price than Semrush.
Backlinks
Backlink data needs a huge crawler and years of history, which is why only a few companies have a serious index. For a small business, the free options are usually enough:
- Google Search Console "Links" report shows a sample of who links to you.
- Ahrefs' free site tools show backlinks to your own verified site.
- For competitor link research, there is no cheap substitute for a month of Ahrefs or Semrush. Buy one month when you need it, then cancel.
Site audit
This job is the easiest to replace, and you probably should.
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls up to 500 URLs free and has no crawl limit on the paid licence at $279 a year. It is the standard for deep technical crawls.
- Seobility has a free plan that crawls 100 pages for one site, with paid plans from $69.90 a month on its pricing page (USD, monthly billing).
- KissMySkills AI SEO audit checks a page for title, meta, headings, canonical, schema, llms.txt and AI crawler access, scores it from 0 to 100 and lists fixes in order of impact. A one-off check is free with no sign-up.
If you want to go deeper, our guide to an AI technical SEO audit walks through the fixes that matter.
Rank tracking
Rank tracking is a commodity now. Dedicated trackers and mid-priced suites do it well for a fraction of the cost.
- Google Search Console gives average position for free. It is not daily tracking for a fixed keyword list, but for many small sites it is enough.
- SE Ranking Core tracks 2,000 keywords daily. SE Ranking shows prices in your local currency, so check its pricing page for the current price where you are.
- Seobility tracks 10 keywords free and more on paid plans.
AI search visibility
This is the new job. People want to know whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers mention them. There are two parts: can AI crawlers read your site, and do AI answers actually cite you.
- Crawl readiness (robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, schema, llms.txt) is a quick check. Our free audit covers it.
- Ongoing mention tracking needs a dedicated tracker: Semrush's AI prompts, Ahrefs Brand Radar, SE Ranking's AI Search add-on, or specialists like Otterly and Peec AI. We compared them in our guide to the best AI visibility tools.
Semrush alternatives compared
Prices checked October 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page, in US dollars. Where we could not see a US dollar price on the vendor's site, we left the price out.
| Tool | Keyword data | Backlinks | Site audit | AI visibility | Entry price/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | Deep | Deep | Yes | Prompt tracking from Starter plan | $139 (SEO plan) |
| Ahrefs | Deep | Deep | Yes | Brand Radar add-on from $199 | $29 (Starter), $129 (Lite) |
| SE Ranking | Good | Good | Yes | AI Search add-on | Core plan; priced in local currency, see seranking.com |
| Screaming Frog | No | No (via integrations) | Deep | No | Free to 500 URLs, then $279/year |
| Seobility | Basic | Basic | Yes | 3 AI prompts free | Free, paid from $69.90 |
| Google Search Console | Your own queries | Sample of your links | Indexing reports | No | Free |
| KissMySkills AI SEO | No | No | Page audit with prioritised fixes | Crawler access, schema, llms.txt check | Free check; monitoring in All-Access $15 |
A note on Surfer: people searching for a Surfer SEO alternative usually want content optimization, not audits. Surfer shows prices in your local currency, so check its pricing page for the current plans; AI tracking is on higher tiers. If content briefs are your main job, see our comparison of AI SEO writing tools.
Budget stack for a small business
Here is a stack we would actually recommend to a local service business or a small online store with one person handling marketing:
- Google Search Console (free). Your real queries, clicks, indexing problems and links.
- Google Keyword Planner (free). Search demand for new pages.
- Screaming Frog free or the KissMySkills AI SEO audit (free). Technical problems and a fix list.
- One month of Ahrefs or Semrush once or twice a year, timed with a site redesign or a content plan. Do your competitor and backlink research in that month, export everything, cancel.
- Optional: a cheap rank tracker if you need daily positions for a fixed keyword list.
Monthly cost for most of the year: close to zero. If you want weekly monitoring and alerts for the audit, the KissMySkills All-Access subscription is $15 a month or $129 a year and includes every other KissMySkills AI tool. For a freelancer or agency with several clients, SE Ranking or Ahrefs Lite is usually the better middle ground than going fully free.
What you lose when you leave Semrush
Be clear-eyed about this before you cancel:
- Historical data. Your tracked keyword history and project settings stay in Semrush. Export them first.
- Competitor research at scale. Seeing which keywords a competitor ranks for, and which pages earn them links, needs a large index. Semrush and Ahrefs win here, and no small tool, including ours, replaces that.
- Ads and market research. If you run Google Ads, Semrush's PPC research is genuinely useful.
- One login. A stack of free tools means more tabs. For some people, the convenience is worth the money.
- Deep crawls of large sites. For sites with tens of thousands of URLs, Screaming Frog's paid licence or a full suite audit wins over any quick checker.
If two or more of these are central to your work, keep Semrush or switch to Ahrefs. If none of them are, you are probably paying for features you do not use.
Where the KissMySkills AI SEO tools fit
Our AI SEO tools do three things: a page audit for classic SEO and structured data, an AI search visibility check (llms.txt, robots.txt rules for AI crawlers, schema, FAQ markup, and whether those crawlers can actually fetch your page), and a fix list in order of impact. If you connect Claude or ChatGPT through the KissMySkills MCP connector, your own AI agent can run the checks and write the fix plan with our SEO skills.
What they do not do: keyword volumes, keyword difficulty, backlink indexes or rank tracking. They are an audit and AI-readiness tool, not a Semrush replacement on its own. They also do not change your site; you or your developer apply the fixes.
The one-off check is free. Weekly monitoring and alerts come with All-Access at $15 a month or $129 a year, alongside AI CRM and the other KissMySkills tools in the dashboard.
FAQ
Which is better, Semrush or Ahrefs?
Both are strong all-in-one SEO tools. Ahrefs is often preferred for backlink research and a simpler interface; Semrush is broader, with ads research, local and content tools. For keyword research they are close. Pick the one whose reports you will actually use, and consider buying a single month when you need deep research.
What's better, Semrush or Ahrefs, for a small business?
For a small business that mostly needs audits and rankings, neither is required every month. Use Google Search Console, a free crawler and a cheap rank tracker, and buy Ahrefs or Semrush for a month when you plan content or research competitors. Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month is the cheapest entry to third-party keyword data from either vendor.
What is the cheapest Semrush alternative?
For audits and AI-readiness checks, free tools: Google Search Console, Screaming Frog's free version (up to 500 URLs), Seobility's free plan and the free KissMySkills AI SEO audit. For keyword and backlink data there is no free equivalent, but Ahrefs Starter and SE Ranking cost less than Semrush's entry plan.
How much does Semrush cost in 2026?
When we checked in October 2026, Semrush plans were $139 (SEO), $199 (Starter), $299 (Pro+) and $549 (Advanced) a month with monthly billing, with lower per-month prices on annual billing. There is a limited free plan.
Can an AI SEO tool replace Semrush?
Not fully. AI SEO tools are good at audits, explaining issues in plain English and checking AI search readiness. They do not have Semrush's keyword and backlink databases. Use them for audits and fix lists, and keep a data tool for research when you need it.
Bottom line
Semrush is worth it if you use its keyword, backlink and ads data every week. If you mostly run audits and check rankings, a free stack plus one paid month a year will save real money. Start with what is free: run a free site audit and AI-visibility check with our SEO tools, fix what it finds, and decide later whether you need a big suite at all.
