ChatGPT Data Analysis vs Julius AI: Which to Use?

ChatGPT data analysis is good enough for most one-off questions about a spreadsheet; Julius AI is the better pick when you need statistics and an analysis you can re-run; and Claude is a strong choice when you want the reasoning explained step by step. None of the three gives you a dashboard your team can open every Monday, which is a different job.

This guide compares ChatGPT for data analysis, Julius AI and Claude on file limits, charts, statistical depth, reproducibility, privacy and price, and shows how to run a fair test on your own data. We make a product for the "dashboard you revisit" job, the KissMySkills AI Dashboard. We say where it fits and where it does not, and it does not replace exploratory analysis in a chat.

How to upload a CSV to ChatGPT (and limits)

  1. Open a new chat and click the attach (paperclip or plus) button.
  2. Choose your CSV or Excel file. You can also add files from connected cloud drives.
  3. Tell ChatGPT what you want: "This is our orders export. Show total revenue by month and the top 10 products, and explain any odd values."
  4. ChatGPT writes and runs Python code on the file, then shows tables and charts in the chat. Ask it to show the code if you want to check its working.

Limits, according to OpenAI's help pages (checked October 2026):

  • CSV files and spreadsheets are limited to roughly 50 MB, depending on row size.
  • Other documents can be up to 512 MB per file.
  • Free users can upload only 3 files a day; paid users can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours.

Practical limits matter more than the headline: very wide files with dozens of columns, merged header rows and mixed date formats cause more trouble than file size does.

Test setup

We do not publish scores from a single dataset, because results change with the file, the prompt and the model version. Instead, here is a test you can run in under an hour on your own data, which tells you far more than any review:

  1. One real CSV with 1,000 to 5,000 rows: dates, two or three category columns (channel, product, region) and two numbers (revenue, units).
  2. An answer key. Before you start, calculate three things by hand in a spreadsheet: total revenue, revenue by month and the top five products.
  3. The same three prompts in each tool:
    • "Summarise this dataset and flag any data quality problems."
    • "Show revenue by month as a chart and the top five products by revenue."
    • "Is the difference in average order value between channels meaningful, or noise?"
  4. Score four things: did the numbers match your answer key, were the charts readable, did it explain its method, and can you run the same analysis next month without starting over?

ChatGPT data analysis results

What to expect when you run the test in ChatGPT:

  • Strengths. Fast, conversational and flexible. It handles follow-up questions well ("now split that by region", "exclude refunds"), cleans messy columns when asked, and produces bar, line and pie charts in the chat. It is the tool most people already pay for.
  • Watch for. On messy exports it can pick the wrong column, sum a column that should be averaged, or read dates in the wrong format. It sometimes writes a confident summary that goes beyond what the chart shows. Ask it to print the code and check the first numbers against your answer key.
  • Reproducibility. Each chat is a one-off. Running the same analysis on next month's file means pasting the prompts again, and the code may differ.

Price, checked October 2026 on OpenAI's site: Plus is $20 a month; Business is $25 per user per month billed monthly or $20 billed annually; Pro tiers start at $100 a month.

Julius AI review

Julius is built for data rather than general chat. You upload files, ask questions in plain English, and it writes and runs code, produces charts and runs statistical tests.

  • Strengths. Statistics (regressions, significance tests, forecasting) are a core use, not an afterthought. Notebooks let you save an analysis and re-run it, which addresses the biggest weakness of chat. It shows its code.
  • Watch for. Usage runs on credits, so heavy analysis on the cheaper plans can run out. It is a workspace for the person doing the analysis, not a dashboard for the people reading the results.
  • Price, checked October 2026 on Julius's own site: Free with a daily credit allowance; Plus $20 a month ($16 billed annually); Pro $45 a month ($37 billed annually); Business from $450 a month.

If you are searching for a Julius AI alternative, the honest answer is that ChatGPT and Claude cover most everyday analysis at a similar price, while Julius stays ahead on statistics and repeatable notebooks.

Claude data analysis

Claude can read uploaded CSV and Excel files and, on all paid plans, create and edit files using code execution. It can build charts, write the analysis as a report, or make an interactive artifact you can view in the chat.

  • Strengths. Clear explanations of method and assumptions, careful with messy data when asked to check it first, and good at turning analysis into a written summary for a manager. Through connectors, Claude can also use outside tools; for example, with the KissMySkills MCP connector it can build a saved dashboard for you.
  • Watch for. The same as any chat tool: check the numbers, and expect to repeat prompts for next month's file unless you save them as a skill or project.
  • Price, checked October 2026 on Anthropic's site: Pro $20 a month ($17 billed annually); Max from $100 a month; Team Standard seats $25 per user per month ($20 billed annually).

Accuracy and reproducibility

All three chat-style tools are only as accurate as the code they write, and the code is only as good as their reading of your file. The common errors are the same everywhere:

  • Summing order totals on a line-item export, which double counts orders.
  • Reading 03/04 as April 3 instead of March 4.
  • Dropping rows where numbers contain "$" or commas.
  • Ignoring refunds stored as separate rows.

Three habits fix most of this: ask the tool to describe the dataset and flag problems before analysing it, ask it to show its code, and check two or three numbers against your own calculation. For formula work in spreadsheets, our guide on what ChatGPT gets right and wrong with Excel formulas covers similar traps.

Reproducibility is the bigger difference. A chat answer is a snapshot. If you need the same view every week, either save the analysis (Julius notebooks, saved prompts in Claude projects) or move it into a dashboard.

Privacy

Before you upload customer or financial data to any AI tool:

  • Check training settings. On personal ChatGPT and Claude plans you can control whether your chats are used to improve models. OpenAI and Anthropic both say business plans (ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, Claude Team and Enterprise) are not used for training by default.
  • Remove what you do not need. Strip names, emails and card details before upload. Analysis rarely needs them.
  • Read the vendor's security page for retention and compliance if you handle regulated data.
  • Prefer local processing when you can. The free version of our AI Dashboard builds charts in your browser, so the CSV is not uploaded at all.

Chat vs dashboard: which do you need?

Ask yourself one question: will you look at this again next week?

  • No, I have a question right now. Use ChatGPT or Claude. They win on flexible, conversational analysis, and we do not try to replace that.
  • No, but I need rigorous statistics. Use Julius.
  • Yes, my team needs to see these numbers every week. Use a dashboard. The KissMySkills AI Dashboard turns a CSV or Google Sheet into KPI tiles, trends and breakdowns. With All-Access ($15 a month or $129 a year) you save it, share a read-only link and refresh it from your Google Sheet. You can even ask Claude or ChatGPT to build it for you through our connector, so the chat analysis turns into something that lasts.

In practice many teams use both. A typical workflow: export last month's orders, ask ChatGPT or Claude what changed and why, decide which five numbers matter, then put those five numbers on a dashboard that refreshes from a Google Sheet. The chat handles the thinking once; the dashboard handles the watching every week. When the dashboard shows something odd, you go back to the chat with a specific question instead of a vague one.

Where our tool does not fit: deep statistics, multi-table analysis and open-ended exploration. Use a chat tool or Julius for those.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT make charts?

Yes. Upload a CSV or Excel file and ask for a chart. ChatGPT runs Python on the file and shows bar, line, pie and other charts in the chat. You can download them as images, but they are not a saved dashboard that refreshes.

Can AI analyze Excel data?

Yes. ChatGPT, Claude and Julius can read Excel and CSV files, clean them, calculate totals and trends, run statistics and draw charts. Check a few key numbers by hand, because AI tools can misread dates or sum the wrong column.

Is Julius AI better than ChatGPT for data analysis?

For statistics and analyses you want to re-run, often yes, thanks to its focus on data and its notebooks. For quick questions about a file, ChatGPT is usually just as good, and many people already pay for it.

Is it safe to upload a CSV to ChatGPT?

It depends on the data and your plan. Check your data controls, use a business plan for company data, and remove personal details you do not need before uploading.

Turn your analysis into something your team can use

Chat is great for finding the answer. A dashboard is how the answer stays in front of your team. Turn your analysis into a dashboard you can share: try AI Dashboard.
