Claude Code Skills for Marketers and SEOs: A No-Code Setup Guide

Claude Code is not only for developers. For a marketer or SEO it is the version of Claude that can open a folder of files on your computer, read a 20,000-row crawl export, write and run the small script needed to process it, and save the result as a new CSV. Skills make it consistent: you install a SKILL.md once and Claude Code follows the same audit method every time. This guide covers the install without jargon, where skills go, and three workflows: a site SEO audit, bulk meta tags and a weekly Search Console report.

Why would a marketer use Claude Code instead of the Claude chat?

Claude chat (web or app) Claude Code
Works with Text and files you upload, within the chat limit A whole folder on your computer, any number of files
Big CSVs Can analyse, but very large files get slow or truncated Writes a script and processes every row
Output Text in the chat, files you download New files saved straight into your folder
Repeat next week Paste the prompt again Run the same skill on the new export
Learning curve None One terminal window and a few commands

If your SEO work is one page at a time, the chat is enough. If it involves exports with thousands of rows, many files, or the same report every week, Claude Code saves hours.

How do you install Claude Code without being a developer?

You need a paid Claude plan (Pro or above) or an Anthropic API account, and about ten minutes. Open the Terminal app (Mac) or a terminal on Linux and paste Anthropic's installer:

curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash

If you already use Node.js, the npm route works too:

npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

Then make a folder for your SEO work, open it in the terminal and start Claude Code:

mkdir ~/seo-work cd ~/seo-work claude

The first run asks you to log in with your Claude account. After that you type requests in plain English, exactly as in the chat. Claude Code asks permission before it edits files or runs commands, so nothing happens without your yes. Installation steps change from time to time, so if a command fails, check Anthropic's Claude Code documentation for the current version. Prefer an editor? There is also a VS Code extension.

Where do skills go in Claude Code?

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file inside. Claude Code looks in two places:

  • Your user folder: ~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md. Available in every project on your computer. Use this for your own SEO method.
  • The project folder: <project>/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md. Only for that project, and shared with anyone who gets the folder. Use this for client-specific rules.

The top of the file says when to use the skill. Claude Code reads that description and loads the skill when your request matches. A minimal SEO skill looks like this:

--- name: meta-tag-writer description: Write or fix SEO title tags and meta descriptions in bulk from a CSV. Use when the user asks about titles, meta descriptions, snippets or CTR. --- # Meta tag writer 1. Read the CSV. Expect columns: url, title, meta_description, top_query. 2. Title: max 60 characters, top query near the start, brand at the end only if it fits. 3. Meta description: max 150 characters, answer the query, end with a reason to click. 4. Never invent facts about the page. If the row has too little information, write NEEDS INPUT. 5. Save as <original-name>-meta.csv with new_title and new_meta columns. Report how many rows changed.

Ready-made skills from KissMySkills are the same kind of file: put each one in its own folder under ~/.claude/skills/. With a Library plan you can skip the files entirely: the KissMySkills connector works inside Claude Code too, so you can ask for "Serge" or the "GSC skill" by name. Our Claude Code skills guide explains skills vs CLAUDE.md vs slash commands in more depth.

Workflow 1: a site SEO audit from a crawl export

Export a crawl from Screaming Frog (or any crawler) as CSV, put it in your seo-work folder, and ask:

Read crawl.csv. It is a Screaming Frog "Internal: All" export. Write a script to find: - internal URLs returning 3xx, 4xx or 5xx, with the pages linking to them - redirect chains longer than one hop - indexable pages with a missing, duplicate or over-60-character title - pages more than 4 clicks from the home page - canonicals pointing to a different URL Save each list as its own CSV in an audit/ folder, and write audit/summary.md with counts and the 10 fixes I should do first, ranked by how many pages each one affects.

Claude Code writes the script, runs it on every row, and you get files you can hand to a developer. With a technical SEO skill such as Robert installed, the summary follows a proper audit structure and priority logic instead of whatever Claude improvises that day.

Workflow 2: bulk titles and meta descriptions

Export URL, title, meta description and top query (from Search Console) into one CSV. With the meta tag skill above, or the AI Meta Description Generator ($19), ask:

Use the meta tag skill on pages.csv. Only rewrite rows where the title is missing, duplicated or over 60 characters, or the meta description is missing or over 150 characters. Show me 10 example rows before you process the rest.

The "show me 10 first" step is the habit that matters. Check the examples, correct the rules once, then let it finish the remaining rows. Upload the result to your CMS through its bulk import (Shopify, WordPress with Yoast or Rank Math, and Webflow all have one).

Workflow 3: a weekly Search Console report

Each Monday, export Search Console Performance (queries and pages) for the last 7 days and the 7 days before, and drop both into a gsc/ folder. With the AI Skill for Google Search Console installed:

Compare gsc/this-week.csv with gsc/last-week.csv. Write reports/[DATE].md with: - top 10 pages by click change (up and down), with the queries that moved them - queries in positions 5-15 with over 100 impressions (striking distance) - pages where impressions rose but CTR fell more than 20% (title or snippet problem) Keep it under one page. No advice I cannot act on this week.

What can go wrong?

  • It edits things you did not mean it to. Work in a dedicated folder with copies of your exports, never in a live website folder, until you are comfortable.
  • It has no live Google data. Claude Code reads what you export. It does not see rankings or search volumes by itself.
  • Usage limits. Big files and long sessions use more of your plan's allowance. Start a new session for each task.
  • Uploading results without a check. Spot-check 10 to 20 rows of every bulk output before it goes into your CMS.

Foire aux questions

Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?+

No. You type requests in plain English. You need to open a terminal, paste an install command and move into a folder, which takes about ten minutes the first time. Claude Code writes and runs any scripts itself and asks your permission before it edits files or runs commands.

Which Claude plan do I need for Claude Code?+

Claude Code works with a paid Claude subscription (Pro or above) or with an Anthropic API account billed by usage. Check Anthropic's current plan page, since what is included changes over time.

Where do I put skills in Claude Code?+

Each skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. Put it in ~/.claude/skills/skill-name/ to use it in every project, or in your-project/.claude/skills/skill-name/ to use it only in that project. Claude Code loads a skill when your request matches the description at the top of the file.

Can Claude Code do an SEO audit?+

Yes, from data you give it. Put a crawl export, Search Console export or list of URLs in a folder and ask for the checks you want. It writes a script to process every row and saves the results as CSV files and a summary. It does not see live rankings or search volumes by itself.

Do KissMySkills skills work in Claude Code?+

Yes. A skill file from KissMySkills goes into its own folder under ~/.claude/skills/. With a Library plan you can also use the KissMySkills connector, which works in Claude Code, Claude, ChatGPT Plus and up, Codex and Cursor, so you can ask for skills by name without managing files.

Is Claude Code safe to use on my website files?+

Work on copies in a separate folder until you are comfortable. Claude Code asks permission before editing files or running commands, but you should still never point it at a live production site folder and should spot-check bulk output before uploading it to your CMS.
