How to Use Claude for PowerPoint Presentations

Claude is more useful for the thinking behind a presentation than for the slides themselves. Use it to turn notes into one governing message, a storyline of slide titles that each state a finding, tight body content and speaker notes. Then build the slides in PowerPoint, or let Claude generate a .pptx file if your plan has file creation. Generators that jump straight to designed slides skip the step that decides whether anyone remembers the deck.

Why start with the storyline, not the slides?

Most bad decks are not ugly. They are a list of topics: "Q3 results", "Challenges", "Next steps". The audience has to work out what each slide means. A good deck does that work for them: every title is a sentence that states the point, and reading only the titles tells the whole story. Consultants call this the horizontal logic of a deck. It is also exactly the kind of structured writing a language model is good at, and the kind most AI slide generators skip.

If you have tried the generators and found them thin, our comparison of AI presentation generators explains why: they are optimised for a deck that looks finished in thirty seconds, not one that argues something.

Step 1: one message and a title-only storyline

I need a presentation. Do not design slides yet. Audience: [WHO, WHAT THEY ALREADY KNOW, WHAT THEY CARE ABOUT] Time slot: [15 MINUTES, INCLUDING 5 MINUTES OF QUESTIONS] What I want them to do afterwards: [APPROVE THE BUDGET / CHANGE A PROCESS / ...] My raw material: [PASTE NOTES, DATA, BULLET DUMPS] 1. Write the governing message: one sentence, under 25 words, that the whole deck proves. 2. Propose a storyline of slide titles. Each title is a full sentence stating a finding, not a topic. Wrong: "Customer churn". Right: "Churn doubled after the price change, mostly in annual plans". 3. Read the titles alone, top to bottom. If the argument has a gap, add the missing title and mark it [GAP]. 4. Recommend a slide count for my time slot and say which titles you would cut first.

Push back here, not later. If a title is vague, ask "what is the number behind this?" If two titles say the same thing, merge them. Changing a title list takes a minute; changing finished slides takes an afternoon.

Turns notes or a rough outline into a slide-by-slide PowerPoint plan: a governing message, titles written as findings, tight bullets, speaker notes, and a flag wherever a chart or table would work faster than another list.

Step 2: content and speaker notes, slide by slide

For each agreed title, write: - Body: at most 3 bullets, each under 12 words, OR one chart/table suggestion (say the chart type, the axes and the one comparison it must make obvious). - Speaker notes: what I say out loud, 60-90 words, in plain spoken English. The notes carry the detail; the slide carries only what the eye needs. - Evidence: which line of my raw material supports this slide. If none does, write [NEEDS SOURCE]. Never put a number on a slide that is not in my raw material.

That last rule is not decoration. Asked for a persuasive deck, a model will happily round, extrapolate or invent a statistic that sounds right. The [NEEDS SOURCE] marker turns that risk into a to-do list.

How do you get it into PowerPoint?

There are three honest routes, in order of control:

  1. Paste into your template. Slower, but your company template, fonts and master slides stay intact. Paste titles first, then notes into the notes pane.
  2. Let Claude build a .pptx. On plans with code execution and file creation turned on, Claude can generate a PowerPoint file you download. It is a clean starting point, not a branded deck; expect to apply your template afterwards.
  3. Use Copilot in PowerPoint if your organisation licenses it, and paste the storyline in as the brief. Claude does the argument, the in-app tool does the layout.

For a quick outline without a chat, the free AI PowerPoint generator turns a topic into a slide plan in the browser.

Step 3: the cut pass

Here is my finished deck as text: titles, bullets and notes. [PASTE] 1. Which slides could be deleted without the governing message losing support? Quote the titles. 2. Which slide has more than one point? Suggest how to split it or what to drop. 3. Where does the audience have to read and listen at the same time? Move that text into notes. 4. Give me the version that fits [12] minutes, using only content already here. Do not tell me what is good about it.

Where does Claude fall short on presentations?

  • It cannot see your template. Unless you give it a screenshot, it has no idea what fits on a slide in your font at your size.
  • It invents numbers under pressure. Every figure must trace back to your source. Keep the evidence rule in every prompt.
  • It cannot rehearse. Timing comes from saying it out loud with a stopwatch. Give Claude your real timing and ask what to cut.
  • Generated .pptx files are plain. Expect clean structure, not brand design.
  • It does not know the room. Politics, the person who will object, the slide your boss insists on: that context is yours to add.

How do you install a skill in Claude?

A KissMySkills skill is a ZIP file with a SKILL.md at its root. In the Claude desktop app, open Customize → Skills, add a skill, upload the ZIP and toggle it on. Skills need code execution, which lives under Settings → Capabilities; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner controls it. Anthropic documents the steps in its Skills help article, and our step-by-step install guide has screenshots.

In ChatGPT or Gemini, open the SKILL.md in a text editor and paste it into custom instructions: a Claude Project, a custom GPT or a Gem. With a Library subscription you skip the file entirely: connect KissMySkills once and ask for the specialist by name in the chat you already use.

In summary:

Let Claude do the argument: one governing message, titles that state findings, notes that carry the detail, and a ruthless cut. The AI Skill for PowerPoint ($19) runs that method for every deck; AI Slides Coach ($19) fixes the slides once they exist.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude make a PowerPoint presentation?

Yes. It can write the full storyline, slide content and speaker notes, and on plans with code execution and file creation it can also generate a .pptx file to download. Expect a plain layout that you then apply your own template to.

Is Claude better than AI slide generators?

For structure and argument, usually yes, because it works on the message before the design. Generators are faster at producing slides that look finished. Many people use Claude for the storyline and a generator or template for the layout.

How many slides should a 10 minute presentation have?

A common guide is about one slide per minute, so eight to twelve, but the right number depends on how dense each slide is. Ask Claude to fit the storyline to your exact time slot and say which titles to cut first.

How do I stop Claude inventing statistics on slides?

Paste your source material and tell it never to put a number on a slide that is not in that material, marking unsupported claims as needing a source.

Does this work with Google Slides or Keynote?

Yes. The storyline, bullets and notes are plain text and paste into any presentation app. Only the generated .pptx file is PowerPoint specific, and Google Slides and Keynote can open it.
