How to Use Claude as a Lightroom Coach: Edit Recipes, Presets and Culling

Claude is a useful Lightroom coach because it does not edit your photo. Show it a screenshot of the Develop module with the histogram visible and it can tell you what is wrong with the exposure and colour, then hand you a recipe in the order Lightroom applies it: Basic, Tone Curve, HSL, Color Grading, Detail, masks. You move the sliders, so you learn the edit and the file stays yours. It is weakest at judging fine detail from a compressed screenshot, and it cannot see what is outside the frame you send it.

What does Claude actually see when you send a Lightroom screenshot?

Claude reads images, so a screenshot works as input. It can see the photo at screenshot resolution, the histogram, the slider values in the right panel and the names of panels you have open. It cannot see the raw file, the metadata you did not show, or detail lost to compression. Three habits make its reading much better:

0:15 · loop 同じAI、同じ質問。ファイル1つで専門家になります。
  • Show the histogram and the Basic panel in the same screenshot. The histogram is the most reliable thing in the image; the preview is the least.
  • Send a before and an after. "Here is where I started, here is where I am" gets better advice than one frame.
  • Say what the photo is for. A moody Instagram post and a bright product image on white want opposite edits from the same file.

How do you get an edit recipe instead of vague advice?

Ask for values, in panel order, with a reason for each. "Warm it up a bit" teaches nothing; "Temp +400, because the white wall reads blue in the histogram" does.

You are my Lightroom Classic coach. I edit; you never claim to have edited anything. Screenshot attached: Develop module, Basic panel and histogram visible. Photo: [PORTRAIT, WINDOW LIGHT, LATE AFTERNOON] Where it will be used: [INSTAGRAM, 4:5] The look I want: [soft, warm, natural skin, not orange, shadows lifted but not grey] 1. Read the screenshot first: what the histogram says about exposure and clipping, and what colour cast you see. Quote the current slider values you can read. 2. Give me a recipe in Develop panel order: Basic, Tone Curve, HSL/Color, Color Grading, Detail, then masks. For each change: panel, control, value or direction and amount, and a one-line reason. 3. Maximum 12 changes. If a change depends on how the previous one looks, say "check, then" before it. 4. Name one thing I should NOT do to this photo and why. I will send a new screenshot after the Basic panel. Wait for it before the next steps.

The last line keeps the session honest. Edits interact: after white balance moves, the HSL advice you got earlier may be wrong. One panel at a time with a fresh screenshot is slower per message and much faster per finished photo. Our guide to using Claude as a photo editing coach goes deeper on that one-step loop.

How do you turn a look you like into a preset?

Once a photo looks right, the fastest route is Lightroom's own: in the Develop module, click the + in the Presets panel, choose Create Preset and tick only the settings that should travel to other photos. Claude helps with the decision Lightroom does not make for you: which settings belong in the preset and which are specific to this one photo.

Here are the final Develop settings for a photo I like (screenshot of each panel attached, or values below): [PASTE OR ATTACH: Basic, Tone Curve, HSL, Color Grading, Detail, Effects] I want a preset for [OTHER PORTRAITS IN SIMILAR WINDOW LIGHT]. 1. Sort every setting into: KEEP in the preset (the look), EXCLUDE (exposure-dependent or photo-specific, like Exposure, White Balance, masks, crop), or MAKE A SEPARATE PRESET (things I may want only sometimes, like grain or vignette). 2. Explain each EXCLUDE in one line. 3. Tell me which checkboxes to tick in the Create Preset dialog. 4. Suggest a name that says what the preset does, not how it feels.

Claude can also write out a preset as the XMP text Lightroom stores it in, which is handy for documenting or sharing a recipe. Treat a hand-written XMP with care: Lightroom silently ignores settings it does not recognise, so always import it with Presets → Import Presets and check it on a test photo before trusting it on a shoot.

Send a screenshot with the sliders visible and it names one action at a time by its on-screen label: which panel, which control, which direction, how far. Works across Lightroom, Photoshop, Canva and Snapseed.

How do you cull a shoot faster with Claude's help?

Claude cannot look at 800 raw files. It can design the culling system you then run with keyboard shortcuts, which is where the time goes anyway.

I shot [A WEDDING, ~1,400 FRAMES] and need to deliver [~350 edited images]. I use Lightroom Classic. Design a culling pass: 1. Pass structure (how many passes, what I am deciding in each, target count after each). 2. What each flag, star rating and colour label means in my system, consistently. 3. The keyboard shortcuts for each step, and Auto Advance. 4. Smart Collections to create so each pass only shows what is left. 5. Rules for near-duplicates: how to pick one from a burst in under 10 seconds. Keep it to one page I can print.

Where does Claude get Lightroom wrong?

  • Fine detail and sharpness. A screenshot is compressed. Do not ask whether the eyes are in focus; zoom to 1:1 in Lightroom and decide yourself.
  • Exact colour. Your monitor, its calibration and screenshot compression all shift colour. Use its advice as direction, and judge skin tones on a calibrated screen.
  • Menu paths after updates. Adobe moves things. If a control is not where Claude says, tell it your Lightroom version and the panel names you see.
  • Classic versus cloud Lightroom. They share sliders but differ in catalogs, presets folders and syncing. Always say which one you use.
  • Taste. It will produce a competent edit. Whether that edit is yours is still your call.

How do you load a skill into Claude?

Two ways. With a one-time file, add it in the Claude app under Customize → Skills (code execution has to be on, under Settings → Capabilities), or paste its contents into a Claude Project's instructions, a ChatGPT custom GPT or a Gemini Gem. Our step-by-step install guide covers each app. With Library, you connect KissMySkills to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor once, then ask for the specialist by name in the chat you already use.

In summary:

Send screenshots with the histogram visible, ask for a recipe in Develop panel order with values and reasons, go one panel at a time, and let Claude sort which settings belong in a preset. Judge sharpness and skin tones yourself. For the full Lightroom workflow: AI Skill for Lightroom ($19). For one-step coaching across Lightroom, Photoshop, Canva and Snapseed: AI Photo Editing Coach ($19). Both are in Library at $9 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude edit photos in Lightroom?

No. Claude does not open or change your files. It reads a screenshot of the Develop module and tells you which slider to move, in which direction and by how much. You make the edit, so the result and the raw file stay yours.

Can Claude see my photo well enough to give editing advice?

It sees the photo at screenshot resolution, the histogram and the slider values. That is enough for exposure, white balance and overall colour, but not for fine detail or focus. Always include the histogram in the screenshot.

Can Claude make a Lightroom preset for me?

It can tell you which settings to include and which to exclude, and it can write a preset as XMP text. The safest route is to create the preset in Lightroom from a photo you like, ticking only the settings Claude marks as part of the look.

Does this work for Lightroom Classic and the cloud version?

Yes, but say which one you use. The sliders are shared, while catalogs, preset folders, syncing and some menus differ, and advice for one can point to menus that do not exist in the other.

Can Claude help me cull a photo shoot?

It cannot look through hundreds of raw files, but it can design your culling system: passes, flag and star meanings, shortcuts, Auto Advance and Smart Collections. That system is where most of the time saving comes from.
