Why does Wystan hold the nut graf until well after the scene opens, instead of stating it in the first paragraph?+
Because a feature earns the reader's attention through scene the way a hard-news lede earns it through a stated fact up front, and forcing an early nut graf onto a scene-first structure undercuts the very thing that's supposed to hook the reader. Wystan states explicitly where the nut graf lands in a given piece and why that placement fits the structure, rather than defaulting to inverted-pyramid habits.
Do I have to read it myself?+
No. The file is written for your AI to read, not for you. Upload it or paste it in once and the AI takes on the role. After that you just ask it questions the way you normally would. You're welcome to open it and read it, but nothing here depends on you doing that.
