How to Use Claude for Tax Prep (What It Can and Cannot Do)

Claude cannot do your taxes, and you should not let it decide a single number on your return. What it can do is take hours out of the work around the return: turning a shoebox of documents into a checklist, categorising a year of transactions, listing deductions worth asking about and writing the questions that make a meeting with your accountant shorter and cheaper.

What can Claude do, and what can it not?

Good at Not reliable for
Building a document checklist for your situation This year's thresholds, rates and limits
Categorising transactions from a CSV Whether you qualify for a specific credit
Explaining what a form or schedule is for Filing deadlines and extensions for your jurisdiction
Preparing questions for your accountant State, local or cross-border rules

The right-hand column has one thing in common: it changes every year or depends on where you live. Check those against your tax authority's current guidance, such as IRS publications in the US, or ask a qualified preparer.

Step 1: How do you build the document checklist?

Help me build a tax document checklist. Do not give me any tax amounts or limits. Country / state: [ ] Tax year: [ ] My situation: [employee / self-employed / both], [married filing jointly / single], [rent / own home], [children: ages], [investments: brokerage, crypto, rental property], [side income: describe] Big changes this year: [moved, new job, started a business, sold property, had a child] 1. List every document I should collect, grouped: income, deductions, credits, business, investments. 2. For each, where it usually comes from and when it typically arrives. 3. Mark the ones people in my situation most often forget. 4. List questions about my situation that I should ask a tax professional, not you.

Step 2: How do you sort a year of expenses?

If you are self-employed, this is where Claude saves the most time. Export transactions as CSV, remove account numbers, and paste a few months at a time.

Here are my business bank transactions for [MONTHS]. Columns: date, description, amount. [PASTE CSV - account numbers removed] 1. Assign each transaction a category from this list: [advertising, software, office supplies, travel, meals, professional fees, equipment, phone and internet, personal, unclear]. 2. Mark anything that looks personal, or mixed personal and business, as REVIEW. 3. Mark anything over [$500] that might be equipment rather than an expense as REVIEW. 4. Give me totals by category. Do not tell me what is deductible. Only categorise.

"Only categorise" keeps Claude in its lane. Deductibility depends on rules and facts it cannot check; the categories are what your accountant actually needs.

Step 3: Which deductions should you ask about?

Based on my situation from step 1 and my category totals from step 2, list deductions and credits that people in a similar situation commonly ASK about. For each: - the name, and what it generally covers in one sentence - what document or record would support it - the question I should ask my accountant to confirm whether it applies to me Do not state any dollar limits, percentages or eligibility thresholds. If you are unsure whether something exists in my jurisdiction, say so.

Step 4: How do you prepare for the accountant meeting?

Ask Claude to turn the three steps into a one-page brief: income sources, totals by category, open questions, documents still missing. A preparer who receives that before the meeting spends the hour on judgement calls instead of sorting receipts, and that is the hour you are paying for.

Where does AI get taxes wrong?

  • Stale numbers. Limits and rates change each year; a model may quote an old one with total confidence.
  • Wrong jurisdiction. It mixes federal, state and other countries' rules unless you are precise, and sometimes even then.
  • Confident eligibility. "You can deduct this" is a legal conclusion that depends on facts it does not have.
  • Privacy. Pasting full documents with ID and account numbers is unnecessary for any of the steps above.
  • No accountability. If a number is wrong, the tax authority asks you, not the model.

Need more than one specialist?

Taxes sit next to bookkeeping, invoicing and cash-flow planning, and each has its own specialist. How do you install a tax prep skill in Claude?

A KissMySkills skill is a ZIP file with a SKILL.md at its root. In the Claude desktop app, open Customize → Skills, add a skill, upload the ZIP and toggle it on. Skills need code execution enabled, under Settings → Capabilities. If the Skills menu is not available on your plan, or you work in ChatGPT or Gemini, open the SKILL.md in a text editor and paste it into a Claude Project, a custom GPT or a Gemini Gem instead.

The other route skips files altogether: connect KissMySkills once and ask for the specialist by name in the chat you already use. That is how Library works, and it is covered in the box above.

In summary:

Use Claude for the checklist, the categorising and the questions, and leave numbers, eligibility and filing to official guidance and a qualified preparer. For the full preparation workflow in one file, Godric ($19). Strip ID and account numbers before you paste anything.

Veelgestelde vragen

Can Claude do my taxes?+

No. Claude cannot file a return, does not see your tax account, and can be wrong about current rules, thresholds and deadlines. It is useful for preparation: organising documents, categorising expenses, explaining what a form is for and listing questions for a tax professional. Use official guidance from your tax authority or a qualified preparer for the final numbers.

Is it safe to upload tax documents to Claude?+

Remove identifiers first: social security or national ID numbers, account numbers, full addresses and employer IDs. You rarely need them for the questions Claude helps with. Review the privacy settings of your Claude plan before uploading financial documents.

Can Claude find tax deductions I missed?+

It can list deductions and credits that people in your situation commonly ask about, which makes a good checklist for your accountant. It cannot confirm that you qualify or what the current limits are. Treat its list as questions to check, not as claims to put on a return.

Why does AI get tax numbers wrong?+

Tax thresholds, rates and limits change every year, and a model's training data has a cutoff, so it may give last year's figure with full confidence. It also mixes rules between countries and states. Always check numbers against the current publication from your tax authority.

Is Claude useful for small business taxes?+

Yes, for bookkeeping hygiene: categorising transactions, spotting personal expenses mixed with business ones, building a quarterly estimated payment calendar to confirm with your accountant, and summarising a year of records before a meeting. The skill in this guide is built for sole proprietors, single-member LLCs and small S-corps.
