Claude Code is not only for developers. For a marketer or SEO it is the version of Claude that can open a folder of files on your computer, read a 20,000-row crawl export, write and run the small script needed to process it, and save the result as a new CSV. Skills make it consistent: you install a SKILL.md once and Claude Code follows the same audit method every time. This guide covers the install without jargon, where skills go, and three workflows: a site SEO audit, bulk meta tags and a weekly Search Console report.
Why would a marketer use Claude Code instead of the Claude chat?
| Claude chat (web or app) | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | Text and files you upload, within the chat limit | A whole folder on your computer, any number of files |
| Big CSVs | Can analyse, but very large files get slow or truncated | Writes a script and processes every row |
| Output | Text in the chat, files you download | New files saved straight into your folder |
| Repeat next week | Paste the prompt again | Run the same skill on the new export |
| Learning curve | None | One terminal window and a few commands |
If your SEO work is one page at a time, the chat is enough. If it involves exports with thousands of rows, many files, or the same report every week, Claude Code saves hours.
How do you install Claude Code without being a developer?
You need a paid Claude plan (Pro or above) or an Anthropic API account, and about ten minutes. Open the Terminal app (Mac) or a terminal on Linux and paste Anthropic's installer:
If you already use Node.js, the npm route works too:
Then make a folder for your SEO work, open it in the terminal and start Claude Code:
The first run asks you to log in with your Claude account. After that you type requests in plain English, exactly as in the chat. Claude Code asks permission before it edits files or runs commands, so nothing happens without your yes. Installation steps change from time to time, so if a command fails, check Anthropic's Claude Code documentation for the current version. Prefer an editor? There is also a VS Code extension.
Where do skills go in Claude Code?
A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file inside. Claude Code looks in two places:
-
Your user folder:
~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md. Available in every project on your computer. Use this for your own SEO method. -
The project folder:
<project>/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md. Only for that project, and shared with anyone who gets the folder. Use this for client-specific rules.
The top of the file says when to use the skill. Claude Code reads that description and loads the skill when your request matches. A minimal SEO skill looks like this:
Ready-made skills from KissMySkills are the same kind of file: put each one in its own folder under ~/.claude/skills/. With a Library plan you can skip the files entirely: the KissMySkills connector works inside Claude Code too, so you can ask for "Serge" or the "GSC skill" by name. Our Claude Code skills guide explains skills vs CLAUDE.md vs slash commands in more depth.

The missing first week: how the tool thinks, what to do in your first hour, what to keep out of a session, and twelve workflows with the exact text to type.
Get the Claude Code Starter Pack →Workflow 1: a site SEO audit from a crawl export
Export a crawl from Screaming Frog (or any crawler) as CSV, put it in your seo-work folder, and ask:
Claude Code writes the script, runs it on every row, and you get files you can hand to a developer. With a technical SEO skill such as Robert installed, the summary follows a proper audit structure and priority logic instead of whatever Claude improvises that day.
Workflow 2: bulk titles and meta descriptions
Export URL, title, meta description and top query (from Search Console) into one CSV. With the meta tag skill above, or the AI Meta Description Generator ($19), ask:
The "show me 10 first" step is the habit that matters. Check the examples, correct the rules once, then let it finish the remaining rows. Upload the result to your CMS through its bulk import (Shopify, WordPress with Yoast or Rank Math, and Webflow all have one).
Workflow 3: a weekly Search Console report
Each Monday, export Search Console Performance (queries and pages) for the last 7 days and the 7 days before, and drop both into a gsc/ folder. With the AI Skill for Google Search Console installed:
What can go wrong?
- It edits things you did not mean it to. Work in a dedicated folder with copies of your exports, never in a live website folder, until you are comfortable.
- It has no live Google data. Claude Code reads what you export. It does not see rankings or search volumes by itself.
- Usage limits. Big files and long sessions use more of your plan's allowance. Start a new session for each task.
- Uploading results without a check. Spot-check 10 to 20 rows of every bulk output before it goes into your CMS.
Want every SEO and marketing skill inside Claude Code?
