Claude is useful for interview prep in three places: decoding what the job ad is really testing, turning your experience into a bank of eight STAR stories, and running a mock interview that asks follow-ups instead of praising you. It is harmful in one place: writing the answers for you. Use it as the interviewer and the editor, never as the ghostwriter.
What is the job ad actually testing?
Every job ad hides a short list of things the hiring manager is worried about. A senior role that mentions "ambiguity" three times is telling you the last person struggled without a spec. Start by making Claude read the ad like a recruiter, not like a candidate.
Keep that list. It becomes the checklist for everything that follows, and it is the same list our free interview questions generator builds from a role title if you want a second opinion.
Every rule above, already loaded: one question at a time, follow-ups when you are vague, a score on structure, specificity, ownership and length, and a story bank of eight examples that tracks which competencies still have no evidence. It never writes the answer for you.

You do not need an answer for every question. You need about eight stories that each cover two or three competencies, told well. Give Claude the raw material and make it ask questions before it does anything else.
The [NEED NUMBER] rule matters. The fastest way to sound junior is a result like "the project went well". The second fastest is a number you cannot explain when asked where it came from.
How do you run a mock interview that pushes back?
Left alone, Claude is a supportive listener. That is the last thing you want the week before an interview. Tell it to behave like a busy interviewer with a scorecard.
Answer out loud, then type what you actually said, not what you meant to say. If you can, record yourself on your phone. Claude cannot hear filler words or pace, so delivery notes have to come from the recording.
What should you ask the interviewer?
"Do you have any questions for us?" is part of the assessment. Generic questions about culture waste it. Use the risks from step 1 to ask questions that show you already understand the job.
Where does Claude get interview prep wrong?
- It flatters. Ask "is this a good answer?" and you will hear yes. Ask "what would a sceptical interviewer pick apart?" instead.
- It writes polished answers that sound rehearsed. Interviewers notice. Use its edits for structure and cut its phrasing.
- It does not know the company. Anything it says about culture, salary bands or the interview format at a specific employer is a guess unless you pasted the source.
- It cannot hear you. Pace, filler words and eye contact need a recording and a human.
- It will fill gaps with invented results unless you forbid it, which is why the story prompt says so explicitly.
Need more than one specialist?
Interview prep is one step of a job search. The CV, cover letter and salary conversation each have their own specialist. Library puts every skill, prompt pack and agent in the catalog (2,500+) inside Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex or Cursor through one connector: you ask for a specialist by name and it loads. It is $9 a month or $59 a year, with a free trial, no card needed. Why a subscription beats buying files · See plans
How do you install an interview prep skill in Claude?
A KissMySkills skill is a ZIP file with a SKILL.md at its root. In the Claude desktop app, open Customize → Skills, add a skill, upload the ZIP and toggle it on. Skills need code execution enabled, under Settings → Capabilities. If the Skills menu is not available on your plan, or you work in ChatGPT or Gemini, open the SKILL.md in a text editor and paste it into a Claude Project, a custom GPT or a Gemini Gem instead.
The other route skips files altogether: connect KissMySkills once and ask for the specialist by name in the chat you already use. That is how Library works, and it is covered in the box above.
