How to make a photo collage
This photo collage maker puts several pictures into one image in a few steps, with no account and no watermark. Everything happens in your browser: the photos are not uploaded, so you can use family pictures, client shots or event photos without sending them to anyone.
- Add your photos. Drop them on the box, tap to choose them, or paste one from the clipboard. They fill the cells in order.
- Pick a layout. There are 15, from two photos side by side to a 4 x 4 grid. If you have more photos than cells, the extra ones wait until you choose a layout with more space.
- Arrange. Drag a photo onto another cell to swap them. Drag inside a cell to choose which part of the photo shows, and use the zoom slider to crop tighter.
- Style it. Set the spacing between photos, the outer border, rounded corners and the background colour.
- Download a PNG or JPG at the size you picked.
Choosing a collage layout
The layout decides what the viewer looks at first. A few rules of thumb:
- One big photo plus smaller ones works when there is a clear hero shot: the couple at a wedding, the finished product, the best view of a trip. Put supporting details in the small cells.
- Even grids (2 x 2, 3 x 3) suit sets of equal weight, such as a product range, a before and after series, or a mood board.
- Side by side and stacked pairs are ideal for comparisons. Use the same zoom on both photos so the subjects look the same size.
- Masonry and mosaic layouts feel more editorial and work well for travel and lifestyle sets with mixed portrait and landscape shots.
Sizes for Instagram, Stories and print
Pick the canvas size before you fine-tune positions, because changing the shape changes how each photo is cropped. Square (1080 x 1080) and portrait 4:5 (1080 x 1350) are the usual feed sizes; portrait takes up more of the screen on a phone. Story (1080 x 1920) is for Stories, Reels covers and phone wallpapers. Landscape 16:9 (1920 x 1080) suits slides, YouTube and desktop screens.
For print, resolution matters. The A4 preset is 2480 x 3508 pixels, which is A4 at 300 pixels per inch. For other paper sizes, choose Custom and multiply the size in inches by 300; you can go up to 6000 pixels per side. Print only looks sharp if the photos you start with have enough pixels for their cells.
Spacing, borders and rounded corners
White space makes a photo collage look calm and deliberate. A thin gap of about 1 percent of the width separates photos without drawing attention, while a wider gap with a matching outer border gives a gallery look. Set spacing to zero for a seamless mosaic. Rounded corners soften the grid and match the style of many apps; keep the radius small (a few percent of the cell) if the photos contain faces near the edges. For the background, white and cream look classic, black makes colours pop, and a brand colour ties the collage to your feed. Choose Transparent and PNG if you want to place the collage on top of another design.
Tips for a better collage
- Mix close-ups and wide shots. Three wide landscapes in a row feel repetitive; a detail shot between them adds rhythm.
- Keep colours consistent. Photos edited in the same style look like one set.
- Check faces and text after cropping. Drag inside a cell to keep heads and logos away from the edges and corners.
- Plan the caption too. The caption and hashtag generator helps with the post, and the storyboard template is handy when a collage tells a story in steps. For more ideas, read about content creation using AI or browse all free AI generators and tools.
When you download, the collage is drawn again at full size from your original photos, so it stays sharp even though the preview on screen is smaller.
Frequently asked questions
Is this photo collage maker really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no paid export. The collage is built in your browser, and your photos are never uploaded to KissMySkills or any other server.
How many photos can I put in a collage?
Up to 16. Layouts range from 2 to 16 cells. If you add more photos than the layout has cells, the extra photos are kept aside and fill in when you pick a layout with more cells.
How do I move or swap photos?
Drag a photo onto another cell to swap the two. Drag inside a cell to change which part of the photo is visible, and use the zoom slider for a tighter crop. You can also select a cell and use the Swap with previous or Swap with next buttons.
What size should a collage be for Instagram?
Use Square (1080 x 1080) or Portrait 4:5 (1080 x 1350) for feed posts and Story (1080 x 1920) for Stories. For print, use the A4 preset or a custom size of about 300 pixels per inch of paper.
Can I make a collage with a transparent background?
Yes. Tick Transparent and download as PNG. The gaps and border will be transparent, so you can place the collage on any design. JPG does not support transparency, so a JPG export uses a white background instead.
