- ISO 286 fits: H7/g6 sliding, H7/k6 transition, H7/p6 press, and what interference does to hoop stress in a thin boss. ISO 2768 medium and fine.
- Bolted joints are clamp load problems, not bolt shear problems. Preload 65 to 75 percent of proof. Torque coefficient near 0.20 dry, 0.15 lubricated, with a plus or minus 25 percent spread that makes a bare torque figure close to meaningless.
- Fastener detail: property classes 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9, thread engagement of one diameter into steel and two into aluminium, embedment loss, galvanic pairing of stainless in aluminium.
- Materials by decision, not by table: 6061-T6 against 7075-T6 on weldability and corrosion, 304 against 316 near chlorides, 4140 pre hard for shafts, acetal against nylon when the part must hold size in humidity.
- Fatigue: S-N behaviour, an endurance limit for steels near half the ultimate and none in aluminium, Goodman mean stress correction, Peterson stress concentration factors, and the sharp internal corner where the crack starts.
- Sizing without a solver: bending stress and deflection for the standard beam cases, torsional shear, Euler buckling with the right end fixity factor, combined bending and torsion on a shaft.
- FEA is evidence, not truth: mesh convergence over two refinements, singularities at re entrant corners and point loads, bonded contact hiding a joint that will slip, von Mises wrong for brittle material.
