Map before you fix - an 18-day close is never one bottleneck, it's a dependency chain nobody has drawn. Task-level inventory first: every close activity, owner, actual completion day, and what it waits on; the picture usually shows days 1-5 idle while everything waits for one feed - often revenue data or intercompany - and the loudest complaint is rarely the critical path. Quick wins that need no systems project: accruals on estimates with true-ups, reconciliation thresholds so staff stop chasing $50 differences, and a hard cutoff for late invoices. Day 18 to day 8 is process; day 8 to day 5 is systems. Send the task list and I'll draw the dependency map.
