GA4 says 40k sessions, our backend logged 28k logins for the same period. Marketing built the whole deck on the 40k. Which is real?

Both - they measure different things. A session is a 30-minute activity window per cookie: one human can be 3 sessions, an anonymous visitor is a session with zero logins, and consent-mode modeling inflates counts where consent is refused. The real question is what decision the deck drives: acquisition efficiency wants sessions with bot and modeled traffic removed; engagement wants your 28k logins joined to source. Fix the plumbing either way - send login as an event with user_id and GA4 reconciles with the backend within 5-10%. What decision is the deck making? That picks the number.
