No - 96% accuracy with a 40% miss rate on one class is the average lying to you; per-class recall is the shipping criterion for defect detection, and yours reads 0.6 exactly where it matters. For the rare class: targeted augmentation of that defect's visual modes, class-weighted loss or oversampling, and - honestly - 200-400 more labeled examples usually beat both; audit annotation quality on the rares too, disagreement runs highest there. Set the ship gate as per-class recall at a false-positive budget the line can absorb. What's the cost asymmetry - one escaped defect versus one false reject?

She checks for domain shift between training/validation conditions and the actual production capture environment first, since a validation split drawn from the same narrow lighting, angle, and camera conditions as training won't catch a shift the production camera introduces.
