Zapier vs Make is decided by two things: how complicated your workflow is, and how many times a month it runs. Choose Zapier when the automation is short, the app you need is obscure, and the person building it is not technical. Its connector library is several times larger and the linear editor is hard to get wrong. Choose Make when the workflow branches, loops over lists, calls an API directly, or fires thousands of times a month, because Make handles arrays and errors properly and costs far less at volume. The mistake most people make is comparing feature lists instead of counting their own monthly runs.

  • You need a connector that only Zapier has. This is the single most common reason to pick it. Check both libraries for your specific tools before anything else, because a missing connector means custom API work.
  • A non-technical person owns it. Marketers, operations coordinators and founders build in Zapier successfully. The linear editor makes an automation readable by someone who did not build it.
  • Volume is low. A few hundred runs a month is comfortably inside the cheap tiers, and the price gap with Make is irrelevant at that scale.
  • You want the shortest path to working. Zapier optimises for that, and it is a legitimate thing to buy.

Where Zapier objectively loses: anything with a list. If your trigger delivers an order with five line items, or a form with a repeating section, you will spend an afternoon fighting it, and the workaround will be fragile. Cost at high volume is the other honest weakness.

When should you choose Make?

  • Your data arrives in arrays. Invoice line items, multi-row spreadsheets, API responses with nested lists. Iterators and aggregators are the reason to be here.
  • The workflow branches. Different paths for different customer types, with different actions and different failure handling on each.
  • You run thousands of operations a month. At that point the cost difference stops being a detail and becomes the whole decision.
  • You need to call an API that has no connector. Make's HTTP module is comfortable to use, and building against a documented API is a normal Tuesday rather than a workaround.
  • You want to see failures. Explicit error routes mean an automation can tell you it broke instead of quietly stopping.

Where Make objectively loses: the learning curve is real. A canvas with routers and iterators is harder to hand over, and the operation counting model confuses newcomers, who see a large number and assume it is expensive when it usually is not. The connector library gap is the other genuine gap.

What do people miss when comparing Zapier vs Make?

  • Silent failure is the actual risk. Both platforms will stop running a workflow when something breaks, and if nobody set up a notification, you find out when a customer asks where their confirmation email went. Before you launch anything important, decide who gets told when it fails, and test that path deliberately by breaking it on purpose.
  • An automation is not documentation. Six months later, nobody remembers why step four exists. Name every step in plain language, keep a one-page note describing what the workflow does and who owns it, and store it somewhere that is not the automation tool.
  • These are glue, not systems of record. When business logic starts living inside a workflow, and a wrong branch means an incorrect invoice, you have outgrown the category. That is the moment to move the logic into your application, or into a tool your engineers can version control. n8n is the honest third option worth evaluating here, particularly if you want self-hosting.
  • Free plans exist on both, and both are real. Small monthly allowances, limited features, but enough to prove the workflow before you pay. Build it on the free tier first, count the actual runs for two weeks, then buy.
  • The cheapest plan often makes the workflow slower, not smaller. Polling intervals are tied to your tier. If your process depends on something happening within a minute, check the trigger frequency before you compare the monthly price.

Who designs the automation once you have picked the platform?

Neither product tells you what to automate. That is the part where most time is wasted: automating a process that should have been deleted, or building a fifteen step workflow when the real fix was a form field. Is Make really cheaper than Zapier?

At volume, yes, usually by a large margin, even though Make counts more billable units per workflow. At low volume the difference is small enough to ignore, and you should choose on connectors and comfort instead.

Can I move a workflow from Zapier to Make?

Not automatically. There is no import. You rebuild it, which for a short workflow takes under an hour and for a complex one takes a day. The upside is that rebuilding usually shortens the workflow, because you notice the steps that were never needed.

Which one is better for AI workflows?

Both connect to the major model providers. Make tends to be more comfortable when the workflow involves handling a model's structured output, looping over results, or calling an API that has no ready connector. Zapier is faster when you just need one AI step inside an otherwise simple chain.

Do I need coding knowledge for either?
