How to split PDF files

This free split PDF tool cuts one PDF into several smaller files, or pulls selected pages out into a new document, right in your browser. Add a PDF, choose how to split it, check the preview of the files you will get, and press Split PDF. One output file downloads as a PDF; several files download together in a ZIP.

1. Add your PDF. Drop it onto the box or tap to choose it. Page thumbnails appear so you can see what you are working with.
2. Choose a mode. By ranges, every N pages, extract pages, equal parts or every page. The colored bars under the thumbnails show which file each page will go to.
3. Check the preview. The list shows every output file with its name and page numbers before anything is created.
4. Split and save. Download everything as a ZIP, or save individual files from the list.

Five ways to split a PDF

By ranges

Type ranges separated by commas, such as 1-3, 4-10, 11-end. Each range becomes its own file. This is the way to separate chapters, invoices in a batch scan, or the main contract from its appendices.

Every N pages

Cuts the document into files of a fixed length. A 40-page scan of two-page forms becomes 20 separate forms with a setting of 2.

Extract pages

Collects the pages you list into one new PDF, in the order you type them. Use the quick buttons to take all odd or even pages, which helps when a duplex scan came out interleaved.

Equal parts

Divides the document into a number of files of nearly the same size, for example to get under an email attachment limit or to share a long reading list between people.

Every page

Saves each page as its own PDF. Handy for certificates, payslips or tickets that were exported together.

Private, fast and lossless

Most PDF splitters upload your entire file to a server, even when you only want one page. Here the work happens inside your browser with an open-source PDF library, so your document never leaves your device and the tool works offline after the page loads. Pages are copied exactly as they are, so text stays selectable, images keep their quality and page sizes do not change. Each output file is usually much smaller than the original, because it only contains the fonts and images its own pages need.

When splitting helps

• Email limits. Many mail servers reject attachments over 20 or 25 MB. Equal parts gets a large report under the limit without touching its quality.
• Portals that want one document per upload. Visa, job and insurance forms often ask for each certificate or statement separately.
• Batch scans. A scanner that saved a whole stack of invoices as one file can be cut back into one PDF per invoice with every N pages.
• Sharing only what is needed. Send the single page a colleague asked for instead of the full confidential report.

Things to know

• Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first. Open the file with its password and save or print a copy without protection.
• Bookmarks, form fields and digital signatures belong to the whole document and may not carry over to the split files.
• Page numbers here are the physical order in the file, which can differ from numbers printed on the pages.
• Large documents split quickly, but very long ones may take a few seconds on older phones.
