Used as an AI personal trainer or a personal coach, Claude does two things genuinely well: it builds structure, and it rehearses with you. A twelve-week training block, a weekly plan that survives a 60-hour job, an interview run through eight times until the answer is tight. What it is not is a clinician, a therapist or a physiotherapist. It cannot see your form, feel your knee, read your bloods or notice that the thing you are calling low motivation is something a doctor should look at. Those are not gaps in the prompt. They are the edge of what the tool is.

That boundary is not a disclaimer bolted on at the end. It is how these skills behave: they hold the structure, and hand you back to a human the moment the question stops being about planning.

What does an AI personal trainer actually do?

It plans, and it adapts the plan when your week falls apart. A human trainer's value splits between programming, technique correction and standing next to you; Claude covers the first only. It holds progression across weeks rather than handing you one workout at a time, works around the equipment you own, routes around a stated injury instead of prescribing rehab for it, and rebuilds the week when you miss three sessions.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for fitness trainers and instructors at $47,160 a year, or $22.67 an hour, as of May 2025. That pays for programming, corrections and presence together. A skill buys the programming.

Interviews you about equipment, schedule, training age and injuries before it programs anything, builds a block with real progression, and rebuilds it when you miss a week. It states plainly that it cannot see your form and routes injury questions to a physiotherapist. The comparison figure is the US median wage for fitness trainers and instructors, $47,160 a year in May 2025, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook.

What do you tell it before it writes a plan?

Most bad AI training plans are bad because the model guessed: a full gym, four free evenings, no injury history, and the patience of someone who has never quit in week three. Say otherwise and the plan changes.

PROMPT - the training intake

Build me a [NUMBER]-week training plan. Ask for anything missing before you write it.

Goal, one sentence: [get stronger / run 10k / stop my back hurting at my desk]
Training age: [never trained / on and off / consistent for 3 years]
Days available and length: [3 days, 45 minutes]
Equipment I actually have: [BE HONEST, INCLUDING NOTHING]
Injuries and anything a doctor told me to avoid: [LIST]
What made me quit before: [too long, too boring, too sore]

Rules:
1. Progress across weeks. Not the same session four times.
2. Per exercise, one line on what it is for and one on what it should feel like.
3. Where an injury makes a movement a bad idea, replace it and say why. Do not give me rehab exercises for it.
4. Build in what to do when I miss a session, before I miss one.
5. If anything I told you should be checked with a doctor or physiotherapist first, say so at the top, before the plan.

Where does a coach stop and a doctor start?

A chat window can help you plan, structure, rehearse and reflect. It cannot examine you. It has no access to your history, medication or labs, and it cannot tell soreness from injury, a flat week from depression, or nerves before a talk from an anxiety disorder. Left alone it will try to be helpful about all of it.

So the rule these skills are built around is simple. Anything about your body involving pain, a diagnosis, medication, pregnancy, a heart or joint condition, or a new symptom goes to a clinician. Anything about your mind involving persistent low mood, panic, an eating pattern that scares you, or thoughts of harming yourself goes to a human professional, and if it is urgent, to an emergency service rather than a chat window. Nutrition sits on the same line: a plan is fine, a clinical diet for a diagnosed condition is not, as the nutrition coach guide covers.

None of that makes the tool useless. It makes it a planner and a sparring partner. A running plan does not diagnose your shin pain; it gets you out three times a week. The AI Running Coach is built on that split: it periodises a block toward a race date and will not tell you whether to run on a sore tendon.

How do you get coaching instead of agreement?

The default failure of every AI coach is agreeableness: tell it your plan and it finds the good in it. A real coach asks the uncomfortable question. Request that explicitly and it does it well.

PROMPT - the pushback pass

You are coaching me, not supporting me. For this conversation, agreement is failure.

What I am trying to do and how: [DESCRIBE IT]
What I have actually done in four weeks: [BE HONEST]

1. Name the gap between those two in one sentence, unsoftened.
2. Name the single thing I am avoiding, and why.
3. Ask me the three questions I have not asked myself.
4. Tell me what to change this week. One change, not five.
5. Tell me how we will know in two weeks, in a number or a yes/no I cannot argue with.

Do not compliment my self-awareness. Do not tell me this is common. If the plan is fine and I am simply not doing it, say that instead of redesigning it.

That last line matters most. Ask why a plan is not working and an AI will build you a better plan, forever, because designing is easier than doing. The AI Life Coach closes that loop: it holds you to the previous commitment before discussing a new one.

Skill · Structure, Not Therapy
AI Life Coach
$19.00this skill vs $234 per houra coaching session

Runs a coaching conversation with a spine: it asks before it advises, holds you to the last commitment, and refuses the redesign-instead-of-doing trap. It also states in writing that it is not therapy and not a clinician, and names what belongs with a human. The International Coaching Federation's 2025 Global Coaching Study reports an average fee of $234 for a one-hour session with an active coach practitioner.

What can it rehearse with you?

This is where a chat window beats a human coach on availability rather than quality, and availability is often the game.

The AI Mock Interview Coach runs the interview against the actual posting, stays in role when you give a weak answer, then breaks character to say which story did not land. Run it eight times and the eighth answer is a different answer. The AI Public Speaking Coach works on script and structure: where the talk loses the room, which sentence does three jobs, what to cut at fifteen minutes instead of twenty. It cannot hear you deliver it, so pace, filler and nerves stay yours to solve with a recording.

The AI Dating Coach needs the same honesty: it helps you write a profile that sounds like you and think through a conversation that went badly, and using it to write messages that misrepresent you ends where you would expect. The AI Career Coach handles the layer above the interview, and pairs with the document side in the AI resume builder guide.

Does reflecting with it actually work?

Journaling with a model is the use most people dismiss and then keep doing. The value is not insight from the machine: a question asked back makes you write the second paragraph, and that is where the thinking is. Ask it to run the review one question at a time, to hand back the pattern rather than an interpretation, and to stop plainly if something you wrote needs a professional. The AI Reflection & Journaling Guide is built to ask rather than answer, and to stop rather than analyse you.

Where does it fail?

  • It cannot see you. Not your squat, not your posture, not your delivery. A photo tells it something about a position; it tells it nothing about the rep that hurt.
  • It is not therapy and not medicine. No history, no examination, no duty of care, no ability to escalate. Pain, symptoms, medication, persistent low mood and anything urgent belong with a human.
  • It agrees by default. Without an explicit instruction to push back it validates, which is comfortable and useless.
  • It forgets unless you make it remember. Keep the plan in one project or paste it back each time.
  • It does not know your context. Your family, your job, what you can sustain: none of it is in the model. A plan built on a fantasy week fails in week two.

How do you install the skill?

Each of these is a SKILL.md file inside a ZIP. In Claude, open Customize → Skills, press the + button, choose Create skill, then Upload a skill, and select the ZIP. Toggle it on and it is live, on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.

The one real requirement is code execution. If the Skills menu is greyed out, turn it on under Settings → Capabilities, where it is listed as code execution and file creation. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner controls it in Organization settings. Anthropic documents all of this in its Skills help article.

In ChatGPT or Gemini the fallback uses the same file: copy the contents of SKILL.md into custom instructions. All of the coaching skills above sit in the life admin collection.

In summary:

Use the AI Personal Trainer ($19.00) for the training block, the AI Life Coach ($19.00) for the conversation that holds you to it, and the AI Mock Interview Coach ($19.00) to rehearse. Ask for pushback explicitly, and take anything medical or psychological to a person. All work in Claude, ChatGPT and any AI chat, no coding, 30-day money-back guarantee.
