    Beyond tracing

Tracing builds the habit. AI can help you see what to teach next.

These AI skills plug into Claude, ChatGPT or any AI chat. Use them to look closer at a child's writing, make more printables and plan the lessons around them.

How to use this handwriting worksheet maker

This free handwriting worksheet maker turns any text into printable tracing sheets. Type a child's name, a list of sight words or a short sentence, pick a letter size, and the sheet is drawn in your browser on classic four-line handwriting paper: a top line, a dashed midline, a baseline and a line for descenders. Nothing is uploaded, so you can safely use the names of the children in your class.

    1. Pick a worksheet type. Trace lines, fade out, name tracing, a full alphabet sheet, or one letter per page.
    2. Type your text. Each line you type starts a new row. Long lines wrap at word boundaries, so a word is never cut in half unless it is longer than a whole row.
    3. Choose the letter size and tracing style. Dotted, dashed or solid gray letters, with an optional solid model letter at the start of each row and a start dot that shows where the pencil begins.
    4. Print or save as PDF. Every page has the title and a Name and Date line, and the pages fit both US Letter and A4.

Five kinds of handwriting practice sheets

    Trace lines

The classic tracing worksheet maker layout: each line of your text is printed as dotted letters, one or more times, followed by blank rows where the child writes it alone. Good for spelling words, short sentences and copy work.

    Fade out

Each line appears four times with less help every time: solid, dotted, light gray, then blank. Gradual release like this lets children lean on the model at first and then try without it.

    Name tracing worksheet

Type one name and it fills a whole page, with blank rows between the traced ones. Children usually learn to write their own name before anything else, so a name tracing worksheet is often the first sheet of the year. Make one per child in a minute.

    Alphabet sheet

Aa to Zz, one row per letter, as upper and lowercase pairs or one case only. Add blank rows if you want space for independent practice under each letter.

    One letter per page

For the letter of the week. Type a b c and you get three pages, each with uppercase and lowercase rows, a lighter row and space to write.

    Choosing a letter size

Large letters suit beginning writers who are still learning to control the pencil. Medium is a common step once letters are formed reliably, and small or extra small rows work for older students who copy whole sentences. If the rows feel cramped, use a larger size or fewer rows per page: the rows spread out to use the page. When in doubt, print one page in two sizes and let the child show you which one is comfortable.

    About the letters

The letters are a simple ball-and-stick print style drawn as single strokes for this tool, not a computer font. Lowercase bodies sit between the midline and the baseline, tall letters reach the top line, and g, j, p, q and y drop below the baseline. Because each letter is one clean stroke, the dotted version is a true path to follow rather than the outline of a thick letter.

Cursive is not included yet. If you were looking for a cursive worksheet generator, this tool prints manuscript (print) letters only. Joined cursive needs connecting strokes between every pair of letters, and we would rather ship nothing than ship connections that teach the wrong shapes. Characters outside the supported set (A-Z, a-z, 0-9 and basic punctuation) are left out with a clear message, and accents are removed.

Tips for handwriting practice that sticks

    • Short, frequent practice tends to work better than one long session. One page a day is plenty for young children.
    • Watch the start dots. Starting letters at the top and in the right place matters more than neat dots.
    • Use words the child cares about: their name, family names, pets, favorite foods.
    • Mix tracing with writing from memory. The blank rows are where the learning shows.

    FAQ

Is this handwriting worksheet maker free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on worksheets. Everything runs in your browser and the names and text you type are never sent to a server.

Can I make a name tracing worksheet?

Yes. Choose Name tracing, type the name and pick a letter size. The name fills a whole page with blank rows in between, and the first letter of each row can be solid as a model.

    Does it make cursive worksheets?

Not yet. The tool prints manuscript (print) letters only. Cursive needs clean joining strokes between letters, and we will only add it when those connections are right.

Which letter size should I choose?

Large suits kindergarten and first grade, medium suits grades 1 and 2, and small or extra small suits older students copying sentences. If in doubt, print one page in two sizes and see which is comfortable.

Will the worksheets print on Letter and A4 paper?

Yes. Every page is sized to fit the printable area of both US Letter and A4, and a row is never split across two pages. Choose Save as PDF in the print dialog to keep a file.
