    Skip the drafting

Want a skill that is already tested?

This builder gives you a solid first draft. For skills that are interviewed, trigger-tested and packaged for every Claude surface, use a ready-made one.

    What is a SKILL.md file?

A Claude skill is a folder with one required file, SKILL.md. The file starts with YAML frontmatter that holds a name and a description, followed by plain markdown instructions. Claude reads only the name and description up front. When a request matches the description, Claude loads the full instructions and follows them, so a good skill gives you the same expert workflow every time without re-explaining it.

    ---
    name: pipeline-report
description: "Turns a CRM export into a weekly pipeline report. Use when the user shares a CRM CSV or asks for a sales pipeline summary."
    ---

    # Pipeline Report
    ## Workflow
    1. Read the export and map the columns...

This free Claude skill builder writes that file for you: a trigger-rich description, the inputs Claude should ask for, a numbered workflow, the output format and firm rules. For a full walkthrough, read how to create a Claude skill.

How to use the skill builder

    1. Describe one repeatable task. One skill should do one job well.
    2. Optionally add a name, the audience and any hard rules.
    3. Click Build. Review the SKILL.md in the preview and edit anything that is not right for you.
    4. Download the .zip and upload it in Claude.ai, or unzip it into your Claude Code skills folder.
    5. Test with a few real requests. If the skill does not trigger, make the description more specific about when to use it.

    What makes a skill work

A description that says when, not just what

The description is the only part Claude sees before deciding to load the skill. Name the situations and the words a user would say, for example "use when the user shares a CRM export or asks for a pipeline summary".

    A workflow with real steps

Numbered, imperative steps beat paragraphs of advice. Each step should be something Claude can check it has done.

    Rules and an output format

Say what must never happen (invented numbers, missing owners) and what the deliverable looks like. That is what makes the output consistent across runs.

Free builder or a ready-made skill?

Use this builder when you know the task well and want a quick, editable draft. Pick a ready-made skill from the Claude skills catalog when you want something written by a specialist and already tested on real requests, or use the Claude Skill Creator to turn your own expertise into a polished, trigger-tested skill.

    FAQ

Is the Claude skill builder really free?

Yes. You can build up to 10 skills per day without an account. The text is generated by an open AI model, so review it before you rely on it.

Does the SKILL.md work in Claude.ai and Claude Code?

Yes. The file follows the standard skill format: YAML frontmatter with name and description, then markdown instructions. Upload the .zip in Claude.ai or place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for Claude Code.

    What is inside the .zip?

One folder named after the skill with the SKILL.md inside. You can add scripts, templates or reference files to the same folder later.

Do you store what I type?

Your description is sent to our generator to write the skill. Identical requests are cached for 24 hours so they load instantly; nothing is tied to your name or account. Skill Builder Pro saves a skill to your account only when you click Save version.

    What is Skill Builder Pro?

Pro is included in the KissMySkills All-Access subscription ($9 a month, or $29 a month for teams). It adds a line-by-line security check, multi-file skills with resources and scripts, saved versions, a .skill package with file hashes and a way to submit your skill to the KissMySkills author programme. The free builder and the structure check stay free.

Why did my skill not trigger?

Usually the description is too vague. Add the exact situations and phrases that should activate it, and keep each skill focused on one job.
