How to use these prompts

Copy a prompt, replace every [BRACKETED] part with your real details, and send it. If the answer is generic, add one more constraint (reader, length, example) in the same chat.

Copilot Chat: Work-wide Questions prompts

With a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, Copilot Chat can use your work data (email, meetings, files, chats) that you already have access to. Without it, Copilot Chat answers from the web and the files you add.

#1Catch me up

Catch me up on [PROJECT / CLIENT] from the last [N] days. Use my emails, Teams chats and meetings about it. Give me: decisions made, open questions, what people are waiting on from me (with who and since when), and dates coming up. Max 10 bullets. Link the source for each item.

Word prompts

Open Copilot in Word (Home tab or the Copilot pane). Reference other files with / where your version supports it.

#5First draft from source files

Draft a [DOCUMENT TYPE, e.g. project proposal] for [AUDIENCE] using /[FILE 1] and /[FILE 2]. Structure: [SECTIONS]. Length about [N] words. Tone: [TONE]. Use only facts from the referenced files; where a section needs information they do not contain, insert [TO BE CONFIRMED: what is needed].

#6Summarize a long document

Summarize this document for [READER] who has [N] minutes. Give a one-sentence bottom line, the 5 key points with their section headings, any decisions or approvals requested, and deadlines. Then list 3 questions a critical reader would ask.

#7Rewrite for a different audience

Rewrite the selected section for [NEW AUDIENCE, e.g. customers instead of engineers]. Keep every fact and number. Replace jargon with plain words, shorten sentences to under 20 words, and add one concrete example. Keep the heading.

Excel prompts

Copilot in Excel works on workbooks saved to OneDrive or SharePoint with AutoSave on, and works best when your data is formatted as a table (Ctrl+T) with clear headers. Agent Mode, where available, can build and edit sheets step by step; review every change it makes.

#11Understand a new dataset

Describe this table: what each column contains, the date range, totals, and any blanks, duplicates or values that look wrong. Then suggest 5 questions this data can answer.

#12Formula from a description

Add a column called [NAME] that [WHAT IT CALCULATES, e.g. shows the number of days between Order Date and Ship Date, or "Late" if more than 5]. Explain the formula in one line.

#13Top drivers

Which [CATEGORIES / PRODUCTS / REGIONS] drove the change in [METRIC] between [PERIOD 1] and [PERIOD 2]? Show a summary table sorted by impact and a chart. State the assumption you made about the periods.

#14Highlight what needs attention

Highlight rows where [CONDITION, e.g. Margin is below 20 percent and Revenue is above 10,000] and add a column that says why each row is flagged.

Outlook prompts

Use Summarize at the top of a thread, Draft with Copilot in a new message or reply, and Copilot Chat in Outlook for inbox-wide questions.

#18Summarize a long thread with actions

Summarize this email thread: what is being decided, who is asking what of whom, current status, and any deadline. Then list the actions waiting on me.

#19Reply with the right tone

Draft a reply that [GOAL: e.g. declines the extra scope but offers a paid option / confirms the date and asks for the missing file]. Tone: [TONE]. Max [N] sentences. Keep it specific to this thread and do not promise anything beyond [LIMIT].

Teams prompts

Meeting recap and in-meeting Copilot need the meeting to be transcribed or recorded (depending on your organization's settings). In chats and channels, open Copilot from the chat to summarize.

#24During a meeting: where are we?

Summarize the discussion so far: points agreed, points still open, and who has not been heard on [TOPIC]. Keep it under 8 bullets.

#25Meeting recap and action items

Recap this meeting: the 3-5 key decisions, action items as a table (owner, task, due date), open questions, and anything someone promised to send. Note where an owner or date was not stated.

PowerPoint prompts

Copilot in PowerPoint can create a deck from a prompt or from a file, add slides and summarize a deck. Check every number and image it adds.

#29Deck from a document

Create a presentation from /[WORD OR PDF FILE] for [AUDIENCE] with about [N] slides. One message per slide, titles written as takeaways, speaker notes for each slide, and a final slide with the decision or next step we need.

#30Deck from a prompt

Create a [N]-slide presentation about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE]. Structure: problem, why now, options, recommendation, plan, ask. Keep text to 3 bullets per slide, max 10 words each, and put detail in the speaker notes.

GitHub Copilot Chat prompts

Select code first, or reference context with #file, #selection, @workspace or #codebase. Review diffs before you accept them.

#34Explain unfamiliar code

/explain #selection Explain what this code does, step by step, for a developer new to this codebase. Then list the inputs, outputs, side effects and any edge case that looks unhandled.

#35Find where something happens

@workspace Where is [BEHAVIOR, e.g. the user session refreshed / the price rounded]? List the files and functions involved in the order they run, and explain the flow in 5 steps.

#36Fix a bug from an error

/fix I get this error when [ACTION]: [PASTE ERROR AND STACK TRACE]. Context: #file:[FILE]. Find the root cause, explain it in two sentences, and propose the smallest fix. Do not change public function signatures.

#37Write tests

/tests #selection Write unit tests with [FRAMEWORK, e.g. pytest / Jest] covering the normal case, edge cases ([LIST]) and error handling. Follow the style of the existing tests in #file:[TEST FILE]. Do not mock [THING THAT MUST BE REAL].

#38Refactor safely

Refactor #selection to [GOAL: e.g. remove duplication / split into smaller functions / make it testable]. Keep behavior identical and the public API unchanged. Explain each change in one line and point out anything that needs a new test.

#39Agent mode: implement a small feature

(Agent mode) Implement [FEATURE] in this project. Requirements: [LIST]. Constraints: use [STACK / LIBRARIES], no new dependencies without asking, follow .github/copilot-instructions.md. Plan first and show me the plan; after I approve, make the changes, run [TEST COMMAND] and fix failures until tests pass. Summarize the files you changed.

How to get better answers from Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot are different products, but the same four habits apply to both.

Point it at the source

Mention the file, email thread or meeting with / or by name. Copilot answers from what it can see.

Say who it is for

"For my manager, 5 bullets" beats "summarize this".

Ask for a format

Table, bullet list, email draft, slide outline or code diff. Name the columns or sections you want.

Check before you send

Copilot drafts; you decide. Check numbers, names and dates, and review code changes before you accept them.

A Copilot prompt template

Replace every [BRACKETED] part. Keep the last line: it stops the AI from guessing.

Using [FILE / THREAD / MEETING], [TASK] for [READER]. Keep it to [LENGTH]. Format: [TABLE / BULLETS / EMAIL]. Flag anything that is missing or unclear in the source instead of guessing.

FAQ

What are good Copilot prompts?

Good Copilot prompts name the source (a file, thread or meeting), the reader and the format. The 20 prompts above follow that pattern for each Microsoft 365 app and for GitHub Copilot Chat.

Do these prompts work in free Copilot?

The chat prompts work in free Microsoft Copilot. Prompts that read your files, email or meetings need Microsoft 365 Copilot at work or a Microsoft 365 plan that includes Copilot.

Are there GitHub Copilot prompts here?

Yes, six of the free prompts are for GitHub Copilot Chat: explain code, find where something happens, fix a bug, write tests, refactor and agent mode.

Are these Copilot prompts free?

Yes. The full Copilot Prompts Pack has 45 prompts for $9, or it is included in KissMySkills Pro.
