What is an org chart builder?
An org chart builder turns a list of people and their managers into a clear organisation chart: who reports to whom, which team sits where and how deep each branch goes. This free org chart maker does it straight from a table. Type or paste rows with a name, a title and a manager, and the chart lays itself out. You never drag boxes or redraw connector lines when someone changes teams.
Everything runs in your browser. There is no sign-up, the people data you enter stays in this browser (your draft is autosaved locally) and you can export PNG or SVG with no watermark.
How to make an org chart in four steps
- Load your people. Fill in the table, paste rows from Excel or Google Sheets into the text box, or click a sample to see how it works.
- Pick a layout. Top-down suits most teams. Left-right works better for deep hierarchies and wide screens.
- Tidy the view. Collapse branches you do not need, color boxes by department and let large groups of individual contributors stack compactly under their manager.
- Export. Download PNG for slides and chat, or SVG for print and further editing. Undo and redo are there if a change goes wrong.
Org chart from Excel or CSV: the input format
The builder reads five columns: name, title, manager, department (optional) and id (optional). The manager column can hold a name or an id. The person with no manager becomes the top of the chart. If you export from an HR system, copy the columns from your spreadsheet and paste them in one go:
name,title,manager,department Dana Reed,CEO,,Leadership Omar Haddad,CTO,Dana Reed,Engineering Lena Fox,Head of People,Dana Reed,People Ravi Shah,Backend Engineer,Omar Haddad,Engineering Mia Lopez,Recruiter,Lena Fox,People
Use the id column when two people share a name, and put the id in the manager column instead of the name. If you just want to sketch a structure quickly, use an indented list instead: one person per line as Name - Title, and indent a line to show it reports to the line above.
Dana Reed - CEO
Omar Haddad - CTO
Ravi Shah - Backend Engineer
Lena Fox - Head of People
What the builder checks for you
Real HR exports are messy. The tool flags the problems that usually break an organization chart maker:
- Missing managers. If a manager in the list does not exist as a row, the person is shown at the top level and you get a warning, so nobody silently disappears.
- Circular reporting lines. If A reports to B and B reports to A, the loop is broken and the tool tells you exactly where it was.
- Duplicate names. Two rows with the same name are flagged, so you can add an id before people end up under the wrong manager.
The builder handles hundreds of people; it has been tested with a 500-person company.
Org chart best practices
- Chart roles, not just names. A clear title on every box is what new hires and partners actually look for.
- Keep one source of truth. Maintain the list in a spreadsheet and paste it again when things change, instead of editing boxes by hand.
- Show the right depth. For a board deck, collapse everything below directors. For a team onboarding guide, expand only that team.
- Use department colors sparingly. Colors help when departments are mixed across levels; a single-team chart rarely needs them.
-
Mark open roles. Add a row such as
Open role - Data Analystso hiring plans are visible in the same picture. - Date your chart. Put the month in the file name. Org charts go stale fast, and an old one shared as current causes confusion.
Org chart templates to start from
The sample buttons load ready-made structures you can overwrite with your own names. They are a quick org chart template for a startup, a functional company split by department, or a single team. Replace the rows, keep the shape, and export.
Free version vs Pro
The free org chart builder covers building, checking and exporting: no account, no watermark, PNG and SVG. Your draft lives only in this browser, so clearing browser data removes it. Upgrade to Pro when the chart needs to live somewhere else. With the All-Access subscription (Pro $9 per month, Team $29 per month for 5 seats) you can save charts to your account (up to 50 on Pro, 500 on Team), share a read-only link you can revoke at any time, and export PDF or PPTX (one slide with the chart as a high resolution image).

FAQ
Is the org chart builder really free?
Yes. Building, editing and exporting PNG or SVG are free with no sign-up and no watermark. Saving to an account, share links, PDF and PPTX export are part of the paid All-Access subscription.
Can I make an org chart from Excel or CSV?
Yes. Copy the columns name, title and manager (plus optional department and id) from Excel or Google Sheets and paste them into the text box. The chart is laid out automatically.
How many people can an org chart have?
The builder handles hundreds of people and has been tested with 500. Large groups of individual contributors are stacked compactly, and you can collapse any branch.
Is my employee data private?
The free tool runs fully in your browser and your draft is saved only in this browser. Nothing is stored in an account unless you are on Pro and choose to save the chart.
How do I export an org chart to PowerPoint or PDF?
PNG and SVG export are free and work in any slide deck. Pro adds PDF export and PPTX export, which creates one slide with the chart as a high resolution image.
