Veelgestelde vragen

Can Claude write travel articles?+

It can write something that reads like one, and that is the problem. It has never been anywhere, so it produces the average of every piece ever published about a place: the tram, the sardines, the tiles catching the light. Warm, plausible, unobserved. The cruel part is who it works on - a reader who has been there spots it immediately, and a reader who has not cannot, so the piece is convincing to exactly the audience it misleads. Use it to interrogate you for real detail rather than to supply invented detail.

Why does AI travel writing sound like a brochure?+

Because a cliché is a category reported where a particular belongs, and a category is all a language model has. Bustling market, hidden gem, warm and welcoming locals - these are not merely overused adjectives, they are the average of ten thousand articles, which is what the model is made of. The fix is not to ban the phrases but to replace every general word with a specific thing you actually saw, and to cut the line when you cannot supply one rather than letting the model fill it.

What is the best way to use AI for a travel piece?+

Ask it questions instead of asking it for sentences. You already have the particulars because you were there, but the things that make a piece are almost never what seemed interesting at the time - they are what you dismissed as too small or too unflattering. Three questions produce more than the rest combined: what you got wrong about the place before you went, what you did on the afternoon nothing was planned, and what you did not like. Instruct it never to suggest an answer, not even as an example.

Will it invent restaurants, prices or opening times?+

Yes, and in travel writing an invented detail has a victim, because somebody reads the piece and goes there. Pull every checkable fact into a table before publishing: the claim, the specific source that decides whether it is true, whether it is the kind of fact that changes, and whether you supplied it or the model did. Anything the model supplied is the dangerous list. That covers business names, prices, opening hours, journey times, routes, entry requirements and anything historical.

Should a travel article include something negative?+

One honest negative changes how everything else reads. Almost all travel writing is positive, a good deal of it is funded, and the rest has absorbed the register of the funded kind, so enthusiasm carries no information at all. Say the beach was smaller than the pictures or the town empties at nine, and the reader now believes you about the things you liked. A model will never volunteer this: it is agreeable by construction and reproducing a genre whose average is promotional. Ask for it explicitly, then keep it in when the draft feels harsh.

What is AI actually good at in travel writing?+

Structure, because structure is a pattern problem. It reliably spots that your piece begins three paragraphs before it starts, that the arrival and the hotel check-in are throat-clearing, and that the real opening is the moment on page two. It is also good at telling you the ending has stopped rather than concluded, and at naming the paragraph you are attached to that does no work. Take it seriously on all of that and not at all on whether the prose is good, because asked that it will say yes.

Do I have to disclose a press trip or a free hotel stay?+

Press trips, comped nights, free meals, tourism-board tours and affiliate links are all material connections. The US Federal Trade Commission's guidance is direct: you should disclose that you received free travel and accommodations because it could affect how much weight readers give to your views. The disclosure must be clear and conspicuous - easily noticeable and hard to miss - and the FTC's own suggested wording is as plain as XYZ Resort paid for my trip. Rules differ by country and publication, and an editor's policy may be stricter than the law.

How do I install the Oliver skill?+

The download is a ZIP with SKILL.md at the root of the archive rather than inside a nested folder, which is the usual reason an upload fails. In the Claude desktop app open Customize, then Skills, upload the ZIP and toggle it on. Skills need code execution enabled, under Settings then Capabilities. Anthropic's help centre currently lists Skills on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, while its Academy tutorial lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, so if you are on the free plan check Settings then Capabilities for your own account rather than trusting either page. In ChatGPT or Gemini there is no upload step, so open SKILL.md, copy the contents and paste them into custom instructions.
