How to Switch Between ChatGPT and Claude Without Losing Your Projects

To switch between ChatGPT and Claude without losing your projects, keep the project state outside both of them. Each assistant has its own memory, its own chat history and its own Projects, and none of it syncs to the other. Claude's Import Memory can copy your preferences across once, but it does not carry live work: which client is waiting, which task is half done, what you decided yesterday. The fix is one shared place that both assistants can read and write, such as a CRM connected to both over MCP.

This guide explains what each tool remembers, what you lose when you move between them, the manual ways to carry context over, and the setup we use ourselves: Claude and ChatGPT both connected to one AI CRM. We make that CRM, the KissMySkills AI CRM. We say where it fits and where a simpler option is enough.

Why people use ChatGPT and Claude together

"Claude vs ChatGPT" is one of the most searched AI comparisons, but in practice many people do not pick one. They use both:

  • Different strengths. One for long documents and writing, the other for images, voice or a custom GPT the team already built.
  • Usage limits. When you hit the cap on one, you carry on in the other.
  • Testing. Agencies and developers run the same task through both to see which does it better.
  • Work and personal accounts. Your employer pays for ChatGPT Team, you pay for Claude Pro, and a client gave you a seat in their workspace.
  • A planned move. Searches for "switch from ChatGPT to Claude" and "move from ChatGPT to Claude" grew roughly tenfold over the past year, according to Google Keyword Planner data we pulled in October 2026.

Whatever the reason, the problem is the same. Every time you change assistant, the new one starts without knowing what the old one was doing.

What ChatGPT and Claude remember, and what stays behind

Both assistants now have several layers of memory. None of them is shared with the other company's product.

What it keeps ChatGPT Claude Moves to the other one?
Saved memory (facts about you, preferences) Memory in Personalization Memory in Settings Once, by copy and paste (Claude Import Memory)
Chat history Your chats Your chats No. You can export ChatGPT data as a file, but Claude does not read it as history
Project files and instructions ChatGPT Projects Claude Projects No. You re-upload files and re-paste instructions
Live work state: tasks, clients, deadlines, decisions Scattered across chats Scattered across chats No

The last row is the one that hurts. Preferences are easy to restate. What you actually lose is where each piece of work stands, because it lives in the middle of dozens of conversations.

Option 1: Claude Import Memory (one-way, one time)

Anthropic added an Import Memory tool to Claude for people coming from ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants. In short:

  1. In Claude, open Settings → Memory and turn memory on.
  2. Next to importing memory from other AI providers, start the import and copy the prompt Claude gives you.
  3. Paste that prompt into ChatGPT. It writes out what it knows about you.
  4. Paste the answer back into Claude. Claude adds it to its memory, which can take a while to show up.

Good for: your name, role, tone, formatting preferences, the tools you use and your long-running goals. If you are leaving ChatGPT for good, do this first.

Not good for: anything that keeps changing. It is a snapshot. The moment you go back to ChatGPT and finish a task there, Claude's copy is out of date, and there is no import in the other direction that keeps them in step. Check the current plan requirements on Anthropic's help pages before you rely on it.

Option 2: A handover note you paste every time

The low-tech version that works everywhere. At the end of a session, ask the assistant:

"Write a handover note for this project: goal, what is done, what is in progress, open decisions, next three steps. Keep it under 200 words."

Save it in a doc and paste it into the other assistant when you switch. It is free and needs no setup. The weak points: you must remember to do it every time, the note goes stale the moment someone forgets, and with five projects you have five notes to keep current.

Option 3: One shared workspace both assistants can write to

Instead of copying context between two memories, give both assistants the same external place to keep it. Both ChatGPT and Claude support connectors through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), so they can read and update the same tool directly.

That shared place needs three things to work for this job:

  • Both assistants can write, not only read. If ChatGPT can only look but not update, you are back to manual notes.
  • Structure. Status, owner, next step and date for each item, so "what is stuck?" has a real answer.
  • History. When two agents edit the same board, you want to see who changed what and undo it.

A notes app gives you the first point. A CRM or task board gives you all three, which is why we built ours to be run by agents.

How a shared AI CRM works with ChatGPT and Claude

The KissMySkills AI CRM is a pipeline board you can use like any CRM, or run by talking to your assistant. Both Claude and ChatGPT connect to it through the same KissMySkills connector. Because the CRM sits outside both of them, it does not matter which one you are talking to.

A typical day looks like this:

  1. Morning, in Claude: "Add the lead from this email as a deal, set a follow-up for Thursday." Claude creates the deal and the reminder in the CRM.
  2. Afternoon, in ChatGPT (because that is where your team's custom GPT lives): "What is open for Carter Kitchens?" ChatGPT reads the same deal, sees the follow-up and the notes Claude wrote.
  3. ChatGPT moves it on: "Quote sent, move it to Proposal and note the price." The board updates.
  4. Next day, back in Claude: "What did I do yesterday and what is due today?" Claude reads the board and the history, including the changes ChatGPT made.

Neither assistant needs to remember anything. The CRM remembers, and both of them read it.

It is not only for sales. The default template is a plain task board (To do, In progress, Done), so it works just as well for client projects, content plans or an agent tracking its own work. You can ask either assistant to change the board itself: "Add a Review stage", "Add a field for the client's budget". Every change to the setup is saved in History with a one-click rollback, which matters when two different agents are editing the same thing.

Several jobs, several AI subscriptions, one history

Work, personal and client AI accounts all writing to one shared project history

The same problem shows up when you have more than one account of the same assistant. Searches for "multiple Claude accounts" grew about tenfold over the last year, and it is easy to see why:

  • a company Claude Team or ChatGPT Team seat for your day job;
  • a personal Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus for side projects;
  • a seat in a client's workspace for a contract.

Each account has its own memory and its own Projects, and they never see each other. If your freelance pipeline lives in your personal account, you cannot ask about it from the work laptop.

With a shared CRM, sign in to the connector with the same KissMySkills account from each assistant you use. Every account then reads and writes the same board. Keep separate workspaces in the CRM if you want work and personal kept apart, and switch between them by asking.

How to set it up in 10 minutes

  1. Create the CRM. Sign in at crm.kissmyskills.com with a KissMySkills account and pick a template, or start blank. It is free up to 300 deals.
  2. Connect Claude. Add the KissMySkills connector in Claude (claude.ai, the desktop app or Claude Code) and sign in.
  3. Connect ChatGPT. Add the same connector in ChatGPT and sign in with the same KissMySkills account.
  4. Move your open work in. In the assistant that knows the most, ask: "List every open project or deal we discussed and add each one to the CRM with its status and next step."
  5. Make it a habit. Start sessions with "What is due today?" and end them with "Update the CRM with what we did."

Where this does not fit

  • It does not merge chat histories. Old conversations stay in the app where they happened. The CRM holds the state of the work, not the transcripts.
  • It does not replace Claude or ChatGPT memory. Keep using memory for preferences and tone. Use the CRM for work that changes.
  • Free stops at 300 deals. Unlimited deals come with the All-Access subscription at $15 a month, which also includes the KissMySkills library of skills and agents.
  • Connectors depend on your plan. Custom connectors in ChatGPT and Claude are not available on every plan and every workspace. If your company admin has turned them off, ask them first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer my ChatGPT memory to Claude?

Yes, once. Claude's Import Memory gives you a prompt to paste into ChatGPT, and you paste ChatGPT's answer back into Claude. It copies preferences and background facts, not your chat history or project files.

Does Claude memory sync with ChatGPT?

No. The two companies keep separate memories, and changes in one never reach the other. To keep both up to date, store the changing part of your work in a tool both can connect to.

Can I use ChatGPT and Claude together on the same project?

Yes. Connect both to the same external tool over MCP, such as a CRM or task board, and let each one read and update it. Then it does not matter which assistant you open.

Do Claude Projects and ChatGPT Projects share files?

No. Each keeps its own files and instructions. If a project lives in both, you upload the files twice and keep the instructions in step by hand.

Can I use multiple Claude accounts with one CRM?

Yes. Add the KissMySkills connector to each Claude or ChatGPT account and sign in with the same KissMySkills account. All of them work on the same CRM. See the full guide to multiple Claude accounts.

Is the AI CRM free?

Free up to 300 deals for one user, with full control from Claude and ChatGPT. Unlimited deals are part of All-Access at $15 a month.
