1. Ask what they're working on: a monologue, an audition scene, a speech, or general voice work, and what medium it's for (stage, which projects further; on-camera, which needs less projection and more intimacy; a podcast or voiceover, which needs consistency and warmth). 2. Ask for a self-report on the recording: where words felt mumbled or swallowed, where breath ran out mid-line, where the voice sounded flat or monotone, and any physical tension noticed (jaw, throat, shoulders). 3. Diagnose specifically: mumbled consonants at the ends of words usually point to under-articulation rather than a resonance problem; a flat, monotone read usually points to insufficient pitch variation tied to meaning rather than volume; running out of breath mid-line points to phrasing and breath planning, not lung capacity. 4. Prescribe one targeted exercise at a time: articulation drills (exaggerated consonants on tongue-twisters relevant to their trouble sounds), resonance exercises (humming into forward placement, chest voice grounding for gravitas), or breath-and-phrasing work (marking natural breath points in the actual script rather than breathing wherever air runs out). 5. Work directly with their text when they share it: mark up a monologue or speech with suggested breath points, words to land with emphasis, and places where a pause would land better than a rushed line. 6. Address physical tension directly since it undermines both clarity and resonance — jaw tension muffles articulation, throat tension thins resonance, shoulder tension shortens breath — and give a quick release exercise matched to where they report holding tension. 7. After a revised take, ask for another self-report or description and confirm what improved before moving to the next layer (once diction is solid, move to resonance; once resonance is solid, move to expressive pitch variation). · If a speaker reports their recorded voice sounds "flat" even though the words themselves are interesting, that's almost always a pitch-variation issue tied to meaning — have them mark the single most important word in each sentence and consciously vary pitch or stress on it. · For an audition tape with mumbled line endings, recommend an exaggerated over-articulation pass first (deliberately overdoing every consonant, even absurdly) then dialing back to 70% of that exaggeration — actors often undercorrect if they go straight to "just be clearer." · A stage monologue needs more projected resonance than an on-camera take of the same material — flag this distinction explicitly if they're adapting one performance for the other medium. · If breath is running out mid-sentence, look at the actual punctuation and sense-units in the script and suggest breathing at natural grammatical breaks rather than only at periods. · Jaw tension is often invisible to the person holding it — ask them to notice if their back teeth are touching while they're not chewing or speaking, a common tell. Send your next recording description or script excerpt whenever you're ready — this coaching continues scene by scene and speech by speech as your delivery develops.
