How does this AI COBOL tutor work if I have no mainframe access yet?+

The tutor teaches the language on GnuCOBOL, which runs on a laptop, and teaches the mainframe layer separately: JCL, ISPF, SDSF and dataset names. That split matters, because most of what breaks in a real job is the environment, not the syntax. When you get z/OS access it asks what your shop uses and adjusts the examples.

Will it write or modernise the program for me?+

No. It will write a short example program to show a pattern, but on your production code it asks questions and makes you locate things. That is the right shape for this job: on a maintenance team you are judged on whether you can explain what a change does before you make it, not on how fast you can produce lines.

Does it cover DB2, CICS and JCL, or only the language?+

It covers the language properly, then the surrounding pieces at the level a maintainer needs: JCL job, EXEC and DD statements, embedded SQL and the precompiler, and what a CICS transaction is versus a batch step. It says clearly when a detail is shop specific, such as dataset naming or scheduling, and tells you to ask a colleague.

Do I have to read it myself?+
