Claude is genuinely good at the parts of a road trip that are arithmetic and sequencing: how far to go each day, where to break the drive, which detour costs you forty minutes and which quietly costs you three hours. It is unreliable on live driving times, road and pass closures, ferry timetables, fuel on empty stretches, and whether a campsite still exists. Give it a hard daily driving ceiling in hours or it will build days nobody enjoys - and check the route against a live map before you commit.

What can Claude not know about your route?
A model answers from a snapshot of text gathered long before you asked, and roads change faster than almost anything else in travel. It will give you a driving time, a toll price and a ferry departure in the same confident register, and any of the three can be a year out of date. Web search helps and does not settle it - it can just as easily surface a 2019 forum post as the road authority's own bulletin.
Check all of these at source before you drive:
- Current driving times - on a live map, on the day, for the hour you plan to leave
- Road, tunnel and mountain pass closures, including seasonal ones that shut from October to May
- Roadworks and long-term diversions on the legs you cannot avoid
- Ferry and car-shuttle timetables, and whether vehicles need booking ahead
- Toll costs, and whether the country needs a motorway vignette bought before you enter
- Border crossing hours, and whether your rental agreement even permits that border
- Fuel and charging availability on remote stretches, and opening hours of the last station
- Whether a named hotel, campsite or diner is still trading
- Parking rules and low-emission zone requirements in cities on the route
Source means the road authority, the ferry operator, the rental company's own terms - not a travel blog and not an aggregator. Run this prompt after it hands you a route.
Audit the road trip plan above before I book anything.
1. List every claim in it that could have changed since your training data: driving times, road or pass closures, ferry timetables, toll and vignette rules, border crossing hours, fuel availability on remote stretches, and whether a specific hotel, campsite or restaurant still operates.
2. For each: the claim, your confidence (high / medium / low), and the exact official site to check it on - the national road authority, the ferry operator, the rental company's terms. Not a travel blog.
3. Then list the five most likely ways this trip breaks in practice, and the one change to make now that prevents each.
4. Flag every leg where I would end up driving after sunset, and every night where I have no fallback if the accommodation falls through.
Where you are recalling a number rather than knowing it, say so on the line.
How many hours a day should you actually be driving?
This is the number the whole plan hangs on, and almost everyone sets it too high. Two useful reference points, both from regulators who studied the question for people who drive for a living:
- In the United States, FMCSA hours-of-service rules (49 CFR Part 395) cap a property-carrying driver at 11 hours of driving following 10 consecutive hours off duty, inside a 14-hour on-duty window, with a 30-minute break required after 8 hours of driving.
- In the EU, Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 caps daily driving at 9 hours - extendable to 10 twice a week - and requires a break of at least 45 minutes before 4.5 hours of accumulated driving is exceeded.
Those are legal ceilings for professionals in vehicles they know on routes they have driven before, not targets for a family in a rental with two children and a boot packed to the roof. Take them as the outer wall, then set your own limit well inside it. Four hours of moving time is a comfortable holiday day; six is a long one; eight is a day you spend recovering from.
Two things wreck the arithmetic if you let them. First, set the limit in hours, not miles - 300 km of motorway and 300 km of coastal switchbacks are not the same day, and the model will happily treat them as if they were. Second, a stated driving time is moving time only. A six-hour drive with two 20-minute breaks, a proper lunch and one wrong turn is a nine-hour day, and nine-hour days are how you end up checking in at 21:30 in a town where nothing is open.

- It plans to the navigation estimate. Mapping times assume you never stop, never queue and never miss an exit. The model inherits that optimism and then stacks a full day of sightseeing on top of it.
- No buffer anywhere. Roadworks, a slow border, a long lunch, a child who needs the toilet twenty minutes after you left the services - none of it is in the plan, so the first delay eats the evening.
- Arrival after dark. The plan does not know what time the sun sets where you are going, and most small guesthouses have a staffed check-in window rather than a key box.
- Back-to-back long days. Day two at seven hours and day three at seven hours reads fine on screen. In the car, day three is a different experience entirely.
- The detour tax. A twenty-minute detour is twenty minutes out, an hour and a half at the place, and twenty minutes back. That is over two hours, not twenty minutes, and it is rarely counted.
- It assumes everyone drives. Two licensed drivers and one licensed driver are completely different trips. Say which you are.
What prompt produces a route you can actually drive?
The fix is to state the limits as constraints rather than preferences, and to make the model show its arithmetic. The buffer line below changes the output more than anything else on this page.

Hard limits - these are constraints, not suggestions:
- Maximum [4] hours of moving driving time per day. Maximum, not average.
- No day may have us arriving at that night's accommodation later than [17:00].
- Breaks: 20 minutes for every 2 hours of driving, plus a 60-minute lunch stop. Count these inside the day's total.
- At least one day in every [3] with under an hour of driving.
Build it like this:
1. A table with: day, from → to, moving driving hours, total door-to-door hours including all stops, departure time, arrival time.
2. Add 20% to every leg as a buffer and show both the raw and buffered numbers.
3. Where a leg breaks my limits, say so and split it across an extra night. Do not quietly stretch the day to make the route fit.
4. Flag legs where the road type makes average speed low - mountain, coastal, single carriageway, urban, unpaved.
5. Tell me which days are fragile: the ones where a single delay ruins the evening.
6. If the trip does not fit the nights available under these limits, tell me that instead of compressing it, and show me what to cut.
Point 6 matters. Without it the model will always produce a route that fits, because you asked for one - and the way it makes an impossible route fit is by inventing driving speeds you will not achieve.
Which detours are worth the time they cost?
The stops are what separates a road trip from a transfer. But a stop has a real price in minutes, and the useful question is not whether a place is nice - it is whether it beats driving on and arriving with an extra ninety minutes of daylight.
For every stop you have suggested on this route, give me one line in this exact format:
[Stop] - [minutes off the direct route, one way] - [minutes I would realistically spend there] - [total cost to the day in minutes] - [one sentence on why it beats driving on]
Then sort every stop into three groups: WORTH IT / ONLY IF WE ARE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE / SKIP.
Assume I care about [views, food, industrial ruins, swimming] and do not care about [shopping, theme parks, anything requiring a guided tour].
Do not include a stop only because it is famous. If the best thing on a three-hour leg is a petrol station with a good view, say that instead of inventing something.
Driving costs are the ones people forget: fuel across the whole route, tolls, vignettes, one-way rental fees, city parking. Ask the model to split accommodation into book-ahead and wing-it, and to say why. A town with three guesthouses in August is a booking; a motorway city with forty hotels is not. Then ask it for the check-in window of each place, because that is what turns a late arrival from an inconvenience into a night without a bed.
On the paperwork, three items catch people out repeatedly and are worth asking about by name. Several European countries require a motorway vignette bought before you use the motorway, and the fines for skipping it are real - buy from the official national site and check the activation timing, because a consumer buying online can face a delay before the vignette becomes valid. Cross-border rules live in the rental agreement, not in the model's memory: plenty of contracts bar specific countries outright or require a fee and paperwork arranged before pickup. And one-way rental drop fees can rival the fuel cost of the entire trip, so ask for the loop version of the route as a comparison.
Where does it fail?
- It cannot see live traffic, weather or closures. Everything it says about the road is a memory of the road. The live map is the authority, always.
- It does not know sunset times unless you tell it. Give it the dates and the latitude, or check the arrival-in-daylight assumption yourself.
- It cannot check availability. Not for a hotel, not for a car ferry, not for a campsite pitch in August.
- It underestimates rural stretches. On roads with little data behind them, distances between fuel stops and the existence of specific services are where invention creeps in.
- It will fit any trip into any number of days if you let it. Ask it whether the trip fits before you ask it to plan the trip.
- It is not a substitute for a paper backup. Coverage dies on exactly the roads where the plan matters most. Download the offline map.
