A Notion weekly planner only needs three pieces: one tasks database, a view that shows this week by day, and a short weekly review page. Everything else is decoration that makes the planner harder to keep up. Build those three in fifteen minutes, then use Claude for the two jobs people skip: planning the week from a messy list on Sunday, and reviewing it honestly on Friday. With the Notion MCP connected, Claude can write the plan straight into your database.
Why do most Notion planners get abandoned?
Because they are built for the screenshot, not the week. A dashboard with habit trackers, mood logs, a reading list and six linked databases looks great on day one and takes twenty minutes to update on day eight. The planners that survive are boring: one place for tasks, one view for this week, one ritual to reset. We covered the wider template market in Notion planner templates for freelancers and small teams; this guide is the minimal build.
How do you build the template?
1. Create a Tasks database (a full-page table) with these properties:
| Property | Type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Title | The task, starting with a verb |
| Date | Date | The day you plan to do it, not the deadline |
| Deadline | Date | Only if there is a real one |
| Status | Status | Not started, In progress, Done |
| Area | Select | Work, Home, Health, Admin, or your own 3-5 areas |
| Effort | Select | S (under 30 min), M (an hour or two), L (half a day) |
| Top 3 | Checkbox | The three things that make the week a success |
2. Add three views. This week: a board grouped by Date (by day), filtered to Date is this week. Inbox: a table filtered to Date is empty, where everything new lands. Top 3: a list filtered to Top 3 is checked and Status is not Done.
3. Make a Weekly review page with a template button or a simple heading per week: what got done, what slipped and why, what to drop, the Top 3 for next week. Link it to the Tasks database with a linked view filtered to last week.
That is the whole planner. Resist adding properties until you have used it for a month.
Asks about your life areas, goals and how you like to plan, then designs the whole Notion system: goals linked to milestones and tasks, monthly and weekly planning, habits and a review ritual.

Export or copy your Inbox and anything carried over, then paste it in with your calendar for the week.
Step 4 is the point. Most weekly plans fail because they contain nine days of work. A planner that tells you what does not fit is more useful than one that fits everything in on paper.
Need more than one specialist?
Buying the Notion Planner skill gets you one file. The Library subscription loads every skill in the catalog through one connector, in Claude, ChatGPT Plus and up, Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and keeps each skill updated when we improve it. $9 a month or $59 a year, with a free trial, no card needed.

After three or four reviews you will know your real capacity, and the Sunday plan gets better because the input does.
Can Claude write into Notion directly?
Yes, if you connect Notion's official MCP server. Claude can then search your workspace, read the Inbox view, and create or update tasks in the database after you confirm. Our Notion MCP server guide walks through the setup in Claude Desktop and Claude Code. Ask Claude to show you the changes as a table before it writes anything, especially for bulk updates.
Teaches Claude to use Notion's official hosted MCP server safely: search then fetch before writing, schema checks before adding rows, previewed bulk updates, meeting notes into pages and weekly reports from a database.
Get the Notion MCP Skill →Where does this go wrong?
- Claude does not know your energy. It plans by hours. Tell it which days are draining.
- Estimates are guesses at first. The Friday review is what calibrates them.
- Bulk writes can overwrite. With the MCP connected, always ask for a preview before changes.
- The template grows. Every new property is another field to fill. Add one only when you miss it twice.
How do you install a skill in Claude?
A KissMySkills skill is a ZIP file with a SKILL.md at its root. In the Claude desktop app, open Customize → Skills, add a skill, upload the ZIP and toggle it on. Skills need code execution, which lives under Settings → Capabilities; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner controls it. Anthropic documents the steps in its Skills help article, and our step-by-step install guide has screenshots.
In ChatGPT or Gemini, open the SKILL.md in a text editor and paste it into custom instructions: a Claude Project, a custom GPT or a Gem. With a Library subscription you skip the file entirely: connect KissMySkills once and ask for the specialist by name in the chat you already use.
In summary:
One Tasks database, three views and a weekly review page is enough. Use Claude to plan on Sunday and review on Friday. The Notion Personal Planner & Dashboard skill ($19) designs a fuller system around your life; the Notion MCP Skill ($19) lets Claude work inside it safely.
