Ask Alina something hard.
Need to add a NOT NULL column with a default to a 400GB Postgres table. App writes 24/7, zero downtime allowed. Safe sequence?

On Postgres 11+ the ADD COLUMN with a constant default is metadata-only, so the scary part isn't the add - it's everything around it. Sequence: add the column nullable, backfill in 10-50k row batches with pauses to keep replication lag sane, then add NOT NULL as a NOT VALID check constraint and validate separately - validation takes only a SHARE UPDATE EXCLUSIVE lock, so writes keep flowing. The naive ALTER SET NOT NULL is a full scan under an exclusive lock - 400GB of held breath. Which exact version are you on? It changes two of the steps.
