Free: the blank monthly workbook. Pro: your filled budget, all 4 types, 50 downloads a day and 100 saved documents.

The template organises your own numbers. It is not financial, tax or investment advice.

What is inside the budget workbook

Seven sheets that work together. Yellow cells are inputs; everything else is a formula, so Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice recalculate it on open.

Setup

Your name, year, currency symbol, starting balance and the overspend warning level.

12-month plan

One row per category with a typical month; January to December copy it, and you overwrite any month that differs.

Transactions

1,000 ready rows. Pick the category from a dropdown; month and type fill in by formula.

Actuals

SUMIFS adds every transaction by category and month. Nothing to type here.

Monthly view

Choose a month to see plan vs actual, what is left, and red and amber flags when you overspend.

Summary + charts

Income vs expenses by month, where the money went, plan vs actual by group, end balance and savings rate.

How to make a budget in Excel in 10 minutes

  1. Pick the type. Monthly is the classic. 50/30/20 splits needs, wants and savings. Family adds childcare and school. Weekly works for weekly pay.
  2. Type your typical month. Rename categories to match your life and enter the usual amount. The summary on the right shows what is left to assign.
  3. Download the .xlsx. Open it in Excel, Excel for the web, Google Sheets (File > Import), Numbers or LibreOffice. No macros, no add-ins.
  4. Log what you spend. Add each purchase on the Transactions sheet once a week. The Monthly view and the charts update by themselves.
  5. Review once a month. Look at the red cells, then move money between categories for next month in the plan.

FAQ

Is this Excel budget template really free?

Yes. Filling the form, the live summary and the blank monthly .xlsx are free with no sign-up. Downloading the file already filled with your own categories and amounts, the blank 50/30/20, family and weekly files, and saved budgets are part of All-Access Pro.

Does the budget template work in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets?

Yes. It is a standard .xlsx with plain formulas (SUM, SUMIFS, INDEX, MATCH) and native charts, no macros. It opens in Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, Excel for the web, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice Calc.

What is the 50/30/20 budget?

Half of your after-tax income goes to needs (housing, groceries, utilities, minimum debt payments), 30% to wants and 20% to savings and extra debt payments. The 50/30/20 version tags every category with a bucket and checks your plan against those targets.

Can I change the categories?

Yes, here before you download and later in Excel on the plan sheet. Four spare rows are already covered by every formula, so new categories are counted in the totals and charts.

How do I track spending against the plan?

Log each purchase on the Transactions sheet with a date, category and amount. Actuals and the Monthly view add them up for you, and cells turn amber at 90% of plan and red when you go over.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The workbook is built in your browser. A draft of the form stays in this browser so you can come back; Pro users can also save budgets to their account.

Is this financial advice?

No. The template organises your own numbers. It is not financial, tax or investment advice.
