Sidekiq queue hit 80k jobs overnight - retries of one mailer that 500s. Some users got 6 copies of the same email. Untangle this?

Two separate sins here: the mailer isn't idempotent, and retry policy sat at the default 25 attempts over 21 days. Immediate: kill retries for that job class to drain the queue, then add an idempotency key - a deliveries table with a unique index on user, email type and dedup window, checked before send - so a retry becomes a no-op instead of copy number 7. Then fix the actual 500 (a mailer raising on a nil the template assumed) and set sane retry: 3 attempts, then dead set with an alert. House rule going forward: any job with an external side effect checks idempotency before the effect. Want the migration pattern?
