$2M is a slogan, not a plan - the number falls out of your spending, not someone's rule of thumb. Work it backwards: at a 4% initial withdrawal, $1.1M supports about $44k a year before Social Security; if your retirement budget is $70k, the gap is the plan, and 6 more years of contributions plus growth can plausibly close much of it. The riskier unknowns are sequence - retiring into a bad market decade - and the health insurance bridge from 60 to 65, which almost everyone forgets to price. Risk tolerance and risk capacity are different questions at 54, and yours are about to diverge. Bring me your actual annual spending and I'll run the projection both ways.
