What is a meta description generator?
A meta description generator is a free tool that writes an optimised meta description and title tag for any page in seconds. Enter your page topic and target keyword, and this free meta description generator produces a description in the widely used 150-160 character range and a title tag in the 50-60 character range - with a live character counter so you can see where you are as you write.
It doubles as a meta title generator and SEO title generator, with a Google preview so you can see roughly how your page will look in search results before you publish. Whether it is a homepage, product page, blog post, or about page, you get metadata that fits and reads well.
When you need more than one tag - a full metadata audit and rewrite across every page on your site - the SEO Analyst Skill on KissMySkills turns Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI chat into an SEO partner that finds and fixes the gaps.
Google does not publish a character limit
The 155-character rule that every SEO tool enforces is not Google’s rule. Google’s own documentation says the opposite: there is no limit on how long a meta description can be, and the snippet is truncated in search results as needed, typically to fit the device width.
That single sentence changes what you are optimising for. Truncation is a display phenomenon measured in pixels, not a cap measured in characters. A description of 160 narrow characters can survive where 150 wide ones get cut, and the same tag truncates differently on a phone than on a desktop. Google publishes no pixel figures, so anyone quoting an exact width is guessing.
The 150-160 range is still a sensible working target - it is roughly where descriptions stop being cut on desktop - but it is a community heuristic derived from watching results, not a published specification. Treat the counter above as a guide, not a compliance check.
There is exactly one place Google attaches a character number to snippets, and it runs the other way: the max-snippet:[number] robots directive, where you impose a cap on Google. The same “no limit, truncated to fit” wording appears in Google’s documentation for the <title> element too.
Most descriptions get rewritten, and that is not a penalty
Google says it uses your meta description only when it thinks that description gives users a more accurate summary than text taken from the page itself. The rest of the time it writes its own snippet from your content.
Google has never published how often that happens. Two independent studies from 2020 put it around six or seven times in ten: Ahrefs compared descriptions against desktop snippets for 20,000 keywords and reported a 62.78% rewrite rate, while Portent tested 30,000 keywords and reported 68% on desktop and 71% on mobile. Different samples, different methods, same broad picture - and no Google confirmation of either number.
The reason is structural rather than punitive. One page ranks for many different queries, and one fixed sentence cannot be the best answer to all of them. When someone searches a long-tail phrase, Google pulls the passage from your page that actually contains it. A rewrite usually means your page matched a query your description did not anticipate.
So write the description for the query you are actually targeting and let the long tail go. One thing does reliably backfire: Google states that descriptions made of long strings of keywords are less likely to be displayed as a snippet. The cost of stuffing is non-display, not a ranking penalty.
How to control the snippet when you need to
When it matters that a particular line never appears in search results - an unreleased price, a spoiler, the opening of gated content - the meta description is the wrong lever. Google supports explicit directives instead.
Page level. <meta name="robots" content="nosnippet"> suppresses the text snippet and video preview entirely. max-snippet:[number] caps the snippet at that many characters; max-snippet:0 is equivalent to nosnippet, and max-snippet:-1 tells Google to choose whatever length it considers most effective.
Element level. The data-nosnippet attribute excludes one part of a page while leaving the rest eligible. It is valid on span, div and section elements only, and the markup has to be valid with tags properly closed, or the exclusion will not apply as intended.
If two directives conflict, the more restrictive one wins - a page carrying both max-snippet:50 and nosnippet gets no snippet at all. None of these are written by this tool; they belong in your page template.
What this generator can’t do
It can’t see the rest of your site. Google asks for page-specific descriptions and says identical or similar descriptions across every page are unhelpful when those pages appear individually in results. A tool that works one page at a time cannot tell you that you have written near-identical descriptions for forty product variants. That check needs a crawl.
It can’t predict your snippet. The preview here is an approximation. Real truncation depends on device width and the query, and Google may substitute its own text regardless of what you write.
It can’t move you up the rankings. Google’s only explicit on-record statement is a 2009 Search Central post saying the description meta tag is not used in ranking. That post now carries Google’s own notice that some of its information may be outdated, and the notice reaffirms only the keywords tag. Current documentation makes no ranking claim in either direction. A meta description earns the click, not the position - but treat anyone citing a fresh Google confirmation of that with suspicion.
Worth noting on the other side: Google explicitly encourages programmatic generation of descriptions for larger database-driven sites, asking only that they be human-readable and diverse. Generating them is endorsed. Keeping them genuinely different from each other is the part you still have to supervise.
