What is a YouTube script generator?

A YouTube script generator is a free tool that turns a video idea into a full script outline in seconds. Enter your topic, audience, length, and style, and this free YouTube script generator builds a structured script - a scroll-stopping hook, an intro, the main sections with talking points, and an outro with a clear call to action.

It works as a video script generator for creators, a YouTube outline tool for educators, and an AI YouTube script generator for anyone who wants to stop staring at a blank doc. A strong hook and clear structure are what keep viewers watching to the end.

When you need more than an outline - the full word-for-word script written for you - the Scriptwriter Skill on KissMySkills turns Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI chat into a scriptwriter that takes your outline all the way to a finished script.

The fields your script has to fit inside

A script is only half the upload. The rest is a set of fields with hard limits, and knowing them before you write saves a rewrite later.

Titles cap at 100 characters. YouTube Help states it directly, and the Data API adds the detail that the value “may contain all valid UTF-8 characters except < and >.” Descriptions cap at 5,000 - but note the mismatch worth planning around: Help says 5,000 characters, the API says 5,000 bytes. For anything outside basic Latin script, or with emoji, the real ceiling is lower. Tags share a single 500-character budget across all of them, including the commas and any quotation marks around multi-word tags.

Chapters have three requirements, all of which a script can plan for. The first timestamp must be 00:00, there must be at least three timestamps in ascending order, and the minimum length for a chapter is 10 seconds. Writing your script in labelled sections and noting where each begins turns chapter creation into transcription rather than reconstruction.

Format decides classification. YouTube states that a square or vertical video up to three minutes is categorised as a Short, and that to avoid Shorts classification you should “use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 for long-form videos.” The three-minute ceiling took effect on 15 October 2024, up from a minute - a reminder to check the current figure rather than trusting an older guide.

End screens have their own gate: “Your video has to be at least 25 seconds long to have an end screen,” with up to four elements at standard 16:9 and possibly fewer at other ratios. Cards max out at five per video. If your outro says “links below and on screen,” the script needs to leave enough runway for the elements to appear.

What you say in the first seconds can cost the video its ads

YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines treat language as a monetisation question, and the current wording is qualitative rather than a stopwatch rule: “Content that contains profanity or vulgarity at the start or throughout the majority of the video may not be suitable for advertising,” while “occasional use of profanity… won’t necessarily result in your video being unsuitable for advertising.”

The specifics that survive are about placement and severity. Moderate profanity used frequently in the video, or abbreviated or obscured profanity in the title or thumbnail, still sits in the full-ad-revenue band. Moderate profanity in the title or thumbnail, or focal use throughout a video, drops to limited ads. Stronger profanity in a thumbnail or title, or extreme profanity in the video, gets no ads.

The seconds-based rules people quote have moved repeatedly. YouTube’s own change log shows a March 2023 update setting thresholds around the first seven seconds and the 8-15 second window, and a July 2025 update stating that use of stronger profanity “in the first 7 seconds of content can now be eligible to earn ad revenue.” If your script relies on a specific numeric window, check the guidelines on the day you publish; the durable rule is that titles and thumbnails are treated far more harshly than the video body.

Disclosures belong in the script, not in the description

Two disclosure duties attach at writing time, and one of them cannot be satisfied by a checkbox.

YouTube requires creators to disclose realistic altered or synthetic content - content that makes a real person appear to say or do something they did not, alters footage of a real event or place, or generates a realistic scene that did not occur. Most such videos get a label in the expanded description; content on sensitive topics gets a more prominent label on the player itself. Notably, the list of things that do not require disclosure includes using generative AI “for scripts, ideas, or thumbnails,” along with animation, beauty filters, colour adjustment, upscaling, and cloning your own voice for voiceovers. Writing a script with AI is not a disclosable event; fabricating a realistic clip is.

Sponsorship is stricter. YouTube Studio has a paid-promotion checkbox that shows viewers a disclosure message “for 10 seconds at the beginning of the video,” but YouTube also states that creators and brands “are responsible for understanding and complying with local and legal obligations.” The FTC’s Endorsement Guides require material connections to be disclosed “clearly and conspicuously,” and 16 CFR 255.0(f) adds that where a representation is made through both visual and audible means, the disclosure “should be made in the communication’s visual and audible portions,” and in interactive media “should be unavoidable.”

The FTC’s influencer guidance turns that into script instructions. “If making an endorsement in a video, the disclosure should be in the video and not just in the description uploaded with the video.” Viewers “are more likely to notice disclosures made in both audio and video.” Live streams need the disclosure “repeated periodically.” And on relying on the platform: “Don’t assume that a platform’s disclosure tool is good enough, but consider using it in addition to your own.” In practice that means a spoken line, early, in the script - “this video is sponsored by X” - plus the checkbox, plus on-screen text.

What this generator can’t do

It can’t tell you what your audience will watch. The only retention guidance YouTube publishes in its own words is analytical: the Intro metric “tells you what percentage of your audience still watched your video after the first 30 seconds,” and its suggested action is to “modify the first 30 seconds of your video and experiment with different styles.” That is a measurement to run, not a hook formula to generate.

It can’t improve your discoverability by adding a transcript. The claim that captions boost YouTube search is everywhere and is not something YouTube states. What captions verifiably do is make the video usable for viewers who need them; YouTube accepts a long list of formats including .srt, .vtt, .ttml and .scc, with styling and positioning supported only in the advanced types.

It can’t write a script that fits your delivery. Written sentences and spoken sentences break in different places. Read the output aloud once; every clause you stumble on is one the viewer will hear as unnatural.

It can’t verify a single claim in it. The generator will produce confident-sounding statistics for your topic. On a video, a wrong number is repeated by everyone who quotes the video.

It can’t make the disclosure decision. Whether your video needs a paid-promotion disclosure, a synthetic-content disclosure, both, or neither depends on facts about the deal and the footage that only you have.
