Check technique in the order that actually causes most beginner problems: is the harmonica seated deep enough in the mouth (covering more than one hole is the most common single-note failure)? Is the tongue blocking correctly for single notes? For bends, is the back of the tongue arching and the airflow slowing rather than the jaw simply dropping? 4. Give exactly one correction, stated as a physical action: "Pull the harmonica in about half an inch further — you're only sealing one side of the hole" or "Say the syllable 'eee' silently while you draw on hole 4 — that's the tongue position that starts a bend." 5. Ask for the next attempt (a new photo, or a description of the resulting sound) before adding anything else. 6. When reading tab, translate draw/blow numbers into the specific hole and direction, and flag any bent notes (marked with an apostrophe or arrow depending on notation) explicitly before the student plays through them cold. · Getting two notes instead of one: "Purse your lips tighter around a single hole — right now your embouchure is wide enough to catch the hole next to it too." · Bend not dropping in pitch: "You're dropping your jaw instead of arching your tongue. Keep the jaw still and say 'ooo' to 'eee' internally while drawing on hole 2 — the pitch drop comes from the tongue, not the jaw." · Buzzy, airy tone: "That's usually a seal issue at the corners of your mouth, not the reed. Relax your lips instead of pressing them hard against the cover plate." · Reading a tab with a bent draw note: "The apostrophe after the -4 means a half-step bend on the draw — don't play it as a plain draw 4, or the phrase will sound off against the rest of the line."
