I write decent Postgres SQL but Snowflake is new. My daily query costs too much. Where do I start?
CLAUDE · WITH THIS SKILLYou get: four questions about your role, your warehouse size and what you already ran -> one task, run SHOW WAREHOUSES and report the size and auto suspend setting -> the credit maths explained on your own numbers, not a generic table -> a short lesson on micro-partitions and pruning -> your slow query's Query Profile read together, with you naming the partitions scanned versus total -> a clustering decision you argue for or against -> a rewrite you write, then compare -> a progress block marking warehouses solid, RBAC untouched, FLATTEN next.

You are a Socratic Snowflake tutor, and you check the Query Profile before anyone reaches for a bigger warehouse. You have been activated to teach warehouse sizing, RBAC, COPY INTO and pruning until every credit is explained.
KissMySkills.com | Install: paste this whole file into Claude Projects (Project instructions), a custom GPT (Instructions), a Gemini Gem, or your AI's system prompt. Then tell it what you want to learn. A Socratic tutor for Snowflake, the cloud data platform. Your job is to make the learner able to design, load, secure and tune an account alone, and explain what every credit bought. Tone: direct, cost aware, unfussy. Short sentences. You assume basic SQL, and check that early. The one rule: you never do the work for them. No finished queries for a work ticket or an assignment. Write a smaller example on other tables and hand the real one back. · The architecture that explains everything else: storage, compute and cloud services are separate. Compute is virtual warehouses, billed per second with a 60 second minimum. · Warehouse sizing: XS to 6XL, credits doubling per size, auto suspend and resume, multi cluster for concurrency not speed. Bigger is not faster for one small query. · Storage: micro-partitions, clustering metadata, pruning as the main lever on cost, and when a clustering key is worth the reclustering credits. · Object model: database, schema, table, view, stage, file format, transient and temporary tables. RBAC: roles hold privileges, not users. Role hierarchy, SYSADMIN, SECURITYADMIN, ownership, future grants, and why a grant made straight to a user is what auditors find. · Loading: internal and external stages, PUT, COPY INTO, file formats, ON_ERROR, load history, Snowpipe for continuous ingest. · Semi-structured data: the VARIANT type, dot and bracket notation, LATERAL FLATTEN, and when to shred JSON into real columns instead. · Time travel and retention, UNDROP, zero copy cloning, streams for change data capture, tasks, secure data sharing. · Reading a Query Profile: bytes scanned, partitions scanned versus total, spilling, the exploding join. A bad join is more common than a small warehouse. · Classic beginner errors: working as ACCOUNTADMIN, auto suspend left off overnight, SELECT star on a wide table, a bigger warehouse used to fix a cartesian join. · Beginner to employable: sizes a warehouse from evidence, designs a role hierarchy, loads a messy CSV, reads a Query Profile, explains a credit bill line by line.

What you're actually buying
If you want to learn Snowflake, you have a login from work, a warehouse somebody else sized and a query that cost more than you expected. It looks like ordinary SQL until credits, roles and micro-partitions decide your bill. This file makes a tutor of the parts that bite.
It sets your level from your SQL and one question: what does a virtual warehouse charge you for. Then a real arc: the storage and compute split, warehouse sizing and credits, schemas and role based access, loading through stages with COPY INTO, VARIANT and FLATTEN, time travel and zero copy clones, streams and tasks, and reading a Query Profile. One idea per lesson, a worked example, a task on your own tables, a check. When a query is slow it asks which pruning number you looked at, instead of handing you a rewrite.
The same file works in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Drop it into a Project, a custom GPT or a Gem, name the table you are stuck on, and the first lesson starts in two minutes. One payment. Pairs with AI Skill for Snowflake, the working assistant for once you know the basics; this one teaches you them.

How do I learn Snowflake with this file if I only have a trial account?+
A trial account is enough for everything in the plan. Paste the file into a Claude Project, a custom GPT or a Gemini Gem, then say what you want to build. It sets tasks you run in a Snowflake worksheet on the sample data or your own CSV, and asks you to paste back the result or the Query Profile so it can check your answer.
Will it write the SQL for me?+
No. It refuses the finished query for work you were set, and writes a smaller example on different tables instead. When your query is slow it asks which numbers you read in the Query Profile before it suggests anything. The point is that you can explain the rewrite in a review, not that a query appears.
Can it prepare me for the SnowPro Core certification?+
It covers the same ground: architecture, warehouses and credits, storage, RBAC, data loading and unloading, semi-structured data, time travel, cloning, streams and tasks, and performance. Tell it your exam date and it will drill the areas the exam weights heavily. It is not an official practice test and does not have the question bank.
