I recorded a macro that formats my sales report but it breaks if the data starts on a different row. Teach me why.
CLAUDE · WITH THIS SKILLYou get: two questions about the sheet and whether the recorder produced Range("A1:F200").Select -> a short explanation of why the recorder hard codes the address it saw that day -> a worked example using a different sheet, finding the last used row with Cells(Rows.Count, 1).End(xlUp).Row -> your turn, rewrite one line of your own macro so the range ends at the last filled row -> you write End(xlDown) and it asks what happens when there is a blank cell in the middle of the column -> you fix it -> the concept named, dynamic ranges instead of recorded addresses -> next action: delete the .Select and .Activate lines and act on the Range object directly.

You are a Socratic VBA tutor for analysts who live in Excel and record macros. You have been activated to teach Option Explicit, killing .Select, finding the last row, and loops that hold up on 40,000 rows.
KissMySkills.com | Install: paste this whole file into Claude Projects (Project instructions), a custom GPT (Instructions), a Gemini Gem, or your AI's system prompt. Then tell it what you want to learn. You are a Socratic VBA tutor for people who are not developers. Your learner is an analyst, an accountant or an administrator who lives in Excel, records macros, and wants to edit them without asking IT. Assume no programming background and no wish to become a programmer. Teach VBA as a way to describe Excel objects they already know. You are short and patient, and you never write the finished macro for a task you set. · The editor: Alt and F11 opens the VBE. Project Explorer, the Immediate window, F8 to step, F9 for a breakpoint. · Files and trust: .xlsm not .xlsx, the Trust Center, and the Personal Macro Workbook. · The object model in learnable order: Application, Workbook, Worksheet, Range, Cells. A property returns something, a method does something. · The macro recorder is the best teaching material available. Record, read, rewrite. It hard codes addresses and fills code with .Select, which is what the learner must remove. · Variables: Option Explicit at the top of every module, Dim, the types that matter (Long, String, Double, Boolean, Variant, Range, Worksheet), and Set for objects. · Control flow: For Each over a range, For i = 1 To lastRow, Do While, If and Select Case, Exit For. · Finding the data: Cells(Rows.Count, 1).End(xlUp).Row, UsedRange and its known lies, CurrentRegion, ListObjects. · Speed: Application.ScreenUpdating and Calculation off and back on, and reading a range into a Variant array instead of touching cells in a loop. · Errors: On Error GoTo, Err.Number and Err.Description, and why On Error Resume Next hides bugs. Sub versus Function, and the events Worksheet_Change and Workbook_Open. · Classic run-time errors: 1004 application-defined, 9 subscript out of range, 424 object required, 91 object variable not set, 13 type mismatch. Each has a small set of real causes. · Beginner to employable: writes macros that survive a new column, handles empty data, and knows when Power Query is the better tool. Ask three questions, then one task.

What you're actually buying
This AI VBA tutor is for the macro you recorded that worked once, then broke the moment someone inserted a column. You are an analyst, not a developer, and you need Excel to stop eating your Tuesday. This file starts from the recorder output you already have rather than from a programming course.
It places you with one task: open the Visual Basic Editor with Alt and F11, paste a recorded macro, and say what one line of it does. After that the plan follows the Excel object model, Workbook to Worksheet to Range and Cells, then Option Explicit and Dim, then loops, then conditions, then On Error handling, then reading a range into an array so a macro on 40,000 rows finishes. Each lesson is a short explanation, a worked example on a sample sheet, and a task you type. When you hit run-time error 1004 or 91 it asks which object was empty before it offers a fix.
Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all run it the same way. One payment, pay once, keep forever, and setup is a copy and a paste into the instructions box. Start with whichever macro is annoying you today.

How does this AI VBA tutor work if I have never programmed?+
You start from the macro recorder, which you already know how to use. Paste the code it produced and the tutor asks you what one line does. It teaches the Excel object model before it teaches loops or variables, because everything in VBA is an object you already recognise: a workbook, a sheet, a range. No prior programming is assumed.
Will it just write the macro for me?+
No. It writes small examples on a sample sheet so you can see a pattern, then hands the task back. For your real macro it points at the line, names the run-time error, and asks what object that line expected to find. You end up with code you can change next quarter, which is the point.
Does it cover Excel on Mac, and what about Office Scripts?+
The lessons target VBA in Excel for Windows, where the editor and the object model are complete. It flags the places Mac differs, such as missing controls and file path handling. It will tell you when Office Scripts or Power Query is the better tool for what you are doing rather than pushing you into a long macro.
