What is a company bio generator?
A company bio generator is a free tool that turns a few details about your business into a polished company bio in seconds. Enter your company name, industry, what you do, and your mission, and this free company bio generator writes three versions - a one-line short bio, a medium paragraph, and a full About section - ready for your website, directory listings, or press kit.
It works as a business bio generator for founders, an About us generator for websites, and a company description tool for directory profiles. Instead of struggling to describe your business, you get clear, professional copy that fits wherever you need it.
When you need more than a bio - a full brand narrative and a consistent company story across your site and channels - the Content Strategist Skill on KissMySkills turns Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI chat into a content partner that shapes the whole story.
How many characters can you actually use in a LinkedIn or Google Business bio?
Character limits get repeated constantly in marketing blog posts, and the numbers drift depending on who's writing. The figure most consistently reported for a LinkedIn Company Page About/Overview section is 2,000 characters. We could not directly load LinkedIn's own current help-center page to confirm this exact figure while researching this content, so treat it as a strong starting estimate - worth checking against LinkedIn's live editor before you write right up to the limit, since platforms change these numbers without much notice.
For a Google Business Profile business description, the commonly reported limit is 750 characters, with roughly the first 250 characters shown before a "More" link in most result views - meaning your opening sentence carries most of the weight. As with the LinkedIn figure, we could not independently verify the exact current number on Google's own live help page during research for this content. What we could confirm directly from Google's own guidance is qualitative rather than numeric: no promotional pricing or offers, no links, and no gimmicky formatting in the description field.
The practical mistake we see a lot: writing a bio that only makes sense at full About-page length, then pasting the same text into a review-site profile or a short app-store subtitle and having it cut off mid-sentence. Write your short version first - it should stand alone as a complete sentence - and treat the medium and full versions as expansions, not the other way around.
What do FTC truth-in-advertising rules mean for the claims in your bio?
In the US, the Federal Trade Commission's core rule - laid out in its Policy Statement on Advertising Substantiation and its small-business advertising guidance - is simple to state and easy to violate without noticing: advertising claims, including the ones on your own About page, must be truthful, and you need a reasonable basis for a claim before you publish it, not after someone asks you to prove it. This applies to claims made outright ("founded in 2014") and to claims implied by wording ("trusted by thousands of customers" implies you can point to an actual number).
This isn't legal advice, and enforcement risk varies by claim type and jurisdiction, but the practical takeaway for a company bio is: if you type a founding year, a customer count, an award, or a "first/only/#1" claim into this generator, you should be able to back it up with something concrete if asked. "Trusted by 5,000+ small businesses" is a substantiate-able claim if you can point to that customer count; if you can't, a more modest but honest version ("built for small businesses that need X") makes the same point without the risk.
The generator will happily turn any number or claim you type into fluent-sounding copy - that's the entire function of a template. It has no way to know whether "founded in 2014" or "trusted by thousands" is actually true.
What actually makes an "About Us" bio effective instead of generic?
There isn't a large body of controlled research specifically on About-page copywriting the way there is on, say, headline testing - most of what circulates as "About page best practices" is copywriter experience and UX heuristics rather than published studies, and we'd rather say that plainly than dress up practical advice as science. The clearly reasoned logic that does hold up: a reader scanning a bio is trying to answer one question fast - does this company do the specific thing I need? - and generic language forces them to keep reading to find out, which is exactly where you lose people who are comparing multiple options.
Concretely: "We are a passionate team dedicated to delivering innovative solutions for our clients" tells a reader nothing they couldn't guess about almost any company. "NorthPeak Coffee roasts small-batch coffee and pays farmers directly, without the trading middlemen most roasters use" tells a reader what you actually do, how, and what's different about it - in about the same number of words.
The specific version also survives being cut down: trim it to five words for a directory listing ("Direct-trade small-batch coffee roaster") and it still means something. Trim the generic version and you're left with "passionate team, innovative solutions" - which describes nothing.
What this generator can't do
This tool can't verify that any fact you enter - founding year, mission, what the company does - is accurate. It has no way to check your claims against FTC substantiation standards or any other jurisdiction's advertising-truthfulness rules; that judgment call is yours, and it should happen before publishing, not after.
It also can't create a brand voice from nothing. The output is built entirely from what you type into the industry, "what you do," and "mission" fields - if those inputs are generic, the output will be fluent but equally generic, for the same reason described above.
Finally, it can't replace an actual founder or brand story. A real About page usually earns trust through a specific, verifiable detail - why the founder started the company, a moment that shaped how it operates, a number you can stand behind. This generator produces a structurally sound bio you can build from; it can't manufacture the story itself.
