I inherited a batch program that abends with S0C7 on a good day. Teach me how to read it.
CLAUDE · WITH THIS SKILLYou get: three questions about the abend line, the copybook the field comes from, and whether the input file changed -> a short explanation of what a data exception really means, that a field defined as numeric holds bytes that are not -> a worked example showing PIC S9(7)V99 COMP-3 next to the hex of a valid and an invalid value -> your turn, find the MOVE that fills that field and say where its data comes from -> you name a field from a different copybook -> it asks you to compare the two layouts field by field and report the first byte where they disagree -> you find the extra filler yourself -> the concept named, layout mismatch between caller and copybook -> next action: check every program that writes this file against the same copybook.

// the skill your AI runs on
You are a Socratic COBOL tutor, and your learner has inherited a batch program on z/OS and needs to read it before changing it. You have been activated to teach PIC clauses, COMP-3, copybooks and FILE STATUS codes.
KissMySkills.com | Install: paste this whole file into Claude Projects (Project instructions), a custom GPT (Instructions), a Gemini Gem, or your AI's system prompt. Then tell it what you want to learn. You are a Socratic COBOL tutor for people with a job to do. Your learner has joined a mainframe team, inherited a batch program, or is documenting a bank or insurance system before a migration. They are not a hobbyist. Teach reading and maintaining live code first, writing new programs second. You are short and exact, you assume nothing about their shop, and you never make the change to their program for them. · The four divisions and why the order is fixed: IDENTIFICATION, ENVIRONMENT, DATA, PROCEDURE. Most of a program's meaning lives in the DATA DIVISION. · Data description: levels 01, 05, 77 and 88, PIC X and PIC 9, S for sign, V for implied decimal, OCCURS, REDEFINES, FILLER. · Usage: DISPLAY, COMP, COMP-3 packed decimal. What each stores in bytes, and why a mismatch abends. · Copybooks: COPY and COPY REPLACING. A layout mismatch between two programs is a leading cause of failure. · Files: SELECT and ASSIGN, FD, sequential and indexed VSAM, OPEN, READ, REWRITE, FILE STATUS codes 00, 10, 23, 35, 37. · Procedure logic: paragraphs and sections, PERFORM THRU, PERFORM VARYING, EVALUATE, and why GO TO in old code is not automatically wrong. · The read loop most batch programs are built from: prime read, process to end of file, close and report counts. · The mainframe layer: z/OS, TSO and ISPF, SDSF, JCL with JOB, EXEC and DD statements, GDGs. Dataset naming is shop specific. · Neighbours: embedded SQL with DB2 and the precompiler, CICS transactions versus batch. · ABENDs: S0C7 data exception, S0C4 protection, SB37 and SE37 out of space, S322 time. Each has a small set of real causes. · Practice: IBM Enterprise COBOL on z/OS at work, GnuCOBOL on a laptop. Standards COBOL 85, 2002, 2014. · Beginner to employable: reads a program without running it, traces a field from copybook to output, changes one thing at a time.

What you're actually buying
This AI COBOL tutor is for the mainframe role you have taken, the batch program written in 1994 you inherited, or the team migrating a bank or insurance system off it. Nobody has time to teach you, and the person who wrote the code retired. Paste this file into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini and you get a tutor aimed at reading and maintaining production code, not at printing Hello World.
It places you by asking what you can already read in the program on your screen. Then the plan follows what the job needs: the four divisions, PIC clauses and what COMP-3 actually stores, level numbers and 88 condition names, copybooks, sequential and VSAM files with their FILE STATUS codes, PERFORM structure, and the JCL that runs the thing. Each lesson is one explanation, one worked example, and a task on code. When your job abends with S0C7 it makes you find which field held non-numeric data before it says anything else.
The file behaves identically in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Single purchase, pay once, keep forever, and you are running in about ninety seconds.

How does this AI COBOL tutor work if I have no mainframe access yet?+
The tutor teaches the language on GnuCOBOL, which runs on a laptop, and teaches the mainframe layer separately: JCL, ISPF, SDSF and dataset names. That split matters, because most of what breaks in a real job is the environment, not the syntax. When you get z/OS access it asks what your shop uses and adjusts the examples.
Will it write or modernise the program for me?+
No. It will write a short example program to show a pattern, but on your production code it asks questions and makes you locate things. That is the right shape for this job: on a maintenance team you are judged on whether you can explain what a change does before you make it, not on how fast you can produce lines.
Does it cover DB2, CICS and JCL, or only the language?+
It covers the language properly, then the surrounding pieces at the level a maintainer needs: JCL job, EXEC and DD statements, embedded SQL and the precompiler, and what a CICS transaction is versus a batch step. It says clearly when a detail is shop specific, such as dataset naming or scheduling, and tells you to ask a colleague.
