A good Claude skill is worth it when it saves you more time than it costs, which a specific, role-built skill usually does within the first week. A vague skill that tries to do everything is not worth it at any price. The value is real but not universal, so judge each skill on what it produces.

If you use AI only occasionally or for simple one-off questions, a skill is overkill and a free prompt will do. A badly made skill that promises to do everything for a role can also be worse than none, because it dilutes focus. Paying for vague is never worth it.

Estimate the hours the skill saves you in a normal week, multiply by what your time is worth, and compare to the one-time price. A mid-range skill that saves two hours a week pays for itself in days and keeps paying. If it cannot plausibly save that much time, the return is too low.

Read the listing. A worthwhile skill names what it produces — specific documents, formats, and frameworks — rather than using vague benefit language. It is built for one role and states what it does not do. If you can picture the output from the description, that is a strong signal.

Skills pay off most in document-heavy, repeatable work such as marketing content, sales outreach, reporting, code review, and research synthesis. Anywhere you do the same kind of task often, a configured specialist removes the setup each time, which is where the hours add up fastest.
