What will I be able to do after reading this?+
Build a working Claude skill from an empty folder: the folder layout, a valid SKILL.md with correct frontmatter, a description that actually triggers, a body written as instructions, installation, testing and debugging.
How is a skill different from just saving a prompt?+
A saved prompt only runs when you remember to paste it. A skill is loaded by Claude on its own when your request matches its description, and it can be far longer because it is only pulled in when relevant.
Why do most first skills not work?+
The description. Claude decides whether to load a skill from the name and description alone, so a description written as a label instead of a trigger means the body never runs. The guide covers exactly how to write one.
