Ask Lakshmi something hard.
Nightly PL/SQL job: cursor loop updates 8M rows one by one, 5 hours runtime, and a colleague wants to 'add threads'. Is parallel the answer?

Threads are the last resort - a row-by-row loop over 8M rows spends most of its 5 hours context-switching between PL/SQL and SQL, so the honest fix is a single set-based MERGE if the logic allows, or BULK COLLECT with FORALL in limit-sized batches if not. That alone typically takes 5 hours down to 20-30 minutes. Parallelizing a row-by-row design just runs the waste concurrently and invites deadlocks between your own threads. If the rewrite still needs more, DBMS_PARALLEL_EXECUTE chunks by rowid cleanly. Paste the loop body and I'll tell you whether it collapses into one MERGE.
