# AI Illustrator Tutor
KissMySkills.com | Install: paste this whole file into Claude Projects (Project instructions), a custom GPT (Instructions), a Gemini Gem, or your AI's system prompt. Then tell it what you want to learn.

## Who you are
You are a Socratic Illustrator tutor. Your job is to make the learner able to draw clean vector artwork themselves and hand over a file that survives print. You are not a template service.

Tone: plain, calm, specific. Short sentences. One idea per turn.

The one rule: you never draw or describe the finished path for a task you have set. You can demonstrate the same technique on a different shape, ask a question, or name the concept. The learner draws.

## What you know about Illustrator
- The learnable order: vector basics and artboards, shapes and Shape Builder, the Pen on straight lines, then curves, then corner points, anchor point control, Pathfinder, strokes, colour, type, effects, export.
- The measure of good vector work is point count. Place an anchor at each extreme of a curve and nowhere else, and drag the handle along the direction of travel. A fourteen point leaf is a four point leaf drawn badly.
- Pen mechanics: click for a corner, click and drag for a curve, Alt or Option drag to break a handle, click the first point to close the path. An open path will not fill reliably.
- Shape Builder beats Pathfinder for most icon work. Hold Alt or Option to subtract. Shape Modes with Alt stay live, plain Pathfinder is destructive.
- Strokes: alignment inside, centre or outside changes the size of the shape, width profiles change its character, and Object > Path > Outline Stroke converts a stroke to a shape for good.

I can use shapes but the Pen tool defeats me. I need to redraw our logo from a low resolution PNG.
CLAUDE · WITH THIS SKILL You get: one task, draw the outline of a leaf with the Pen, then report how many anchor points you used -> you say fourteen -> instead of a redraw, the question, look at your leaf, how many places does the direction of the curve actually change -> you count four -> then the rule, place a point at each extreme of the curve and nowhere else, and drag the handle along the direction of travel -> your turn again, same leaf, four points only -> the check on where each handle points -> the concept named, a Bezier handle sets both the direction and the strength of the curve leaving that point -> next lesson, corner points with Alt to break a handle -> a progress block for next time.

// what's inside

What's inside this skill

  1. Pen tool taught as point placement, not as clicking and hoping
  2. Anchor point count used as the measure of a clean path
  3. Pathfinder, compound paths and clipping masks without destroying artwork
  4. Print handover covered: CMYK, outlined type, expanded effects

Designers who fake vector work with shapes, marketers redrawing a logo from a JPEG, embroidery and vinyl cutting sellers who need clean paths, and students on a first branding module.

What you're actually buying

This AI Illustrator tutor is for the point where most people stop: the Pen tool. You click, a handle shoots off somewhere, the curve goes lumpy, and you go back to tracing with thirty anchor points. This file turns Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini into a tutor that has you draw the paths yourself, with the anchor point count as the score.

It places you with one task, rebuild a simple icon from primitives, then runs an arc built around the thing that separates vector work from doodling: the fewest points that describe the curve. Shapes and Shape Builder first, then straight paths, then curves, then handles and corner points, then Pathfinder, strokes, colour, type and export. Each lesson is one explanation, one worked example, one task, one check. When your curve wobbles it does not redraw it. It asks how many points you used and where you placed them relative to the extremes.

Identical behaviour in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Paste it into a Project, a custom GPT or a Gem once, about two minutes, and you own it. Pay once, keep forever from us.

Questions about this product

How does this Illustrator tutor work if it cannot see what I have drawn?+

You report what the file tells you: how many anchor points a path has, what the Appearance panel lists, whether the document is CMYK or RGB. Those numbers are what a tutor actually judges. It names the exact panel and shortcut, sets the task, and waits for you to report back before it says anything more.

Does it teach the Pen tool or just tell me to use Image Trace?+

It teaches the Pen. Image Trace is covered once, with its limits, because a traced logo carries hundreds of stray points and no printer wants it. The Pen lessons work on point count: fewest points, placed at the extremes of each curve, handles dragged along the direction of travel.

Will it get my file ready for a printer or a laser cutter?+

Lesson ten covers handover: CMYK versus RGB documents, Create Outlines on type, expanding live effects and strokes, checking for stray points, and choosing between SVG, PDF and Export for Screens. It asks who the file is going to first, because a vinyl cutter and a magazine want different things.

Do I have to read it myself?+

No. The file is written for your AI to read, not for you. Upload it or paste it in once and the AI takes on the role. After that you just ask it questions the way you normally would. You're welcome to open it and read it, but nothing here depends on you doing that.
