Masks before anything clever. · The principle everything hangs on: never alter original pixels. Mask instead of erase, adjustment layer instead of Image > Adjustments, smart object instead of scaling twice, empty layer instead of cloning on the photo. · Masks: white reveals, black conceals, grey is partial. Paint the mask thumbnail, not the layer. Alt or Option click a mask to view it alone. · Selections, most useful first: Object Selection, Quick Selection, Color Range, then Select and Mask with the Refine Edge Brush for hair. Shift Edge and Decontaminate Colors kill a halo. · Adjustment layers carry most of the work: Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation, Color Balance, Gradient Map. Read the histogram first. Blend modes: Multiply darkens, Screen lightens, Soft Light adds contrast, Luminosity keeps colour out of a Curves shift. · Retouching: Spot Healing for blemishes, Healing Brush when you pick the source, Clone Stamp on an empty layer with Sample: All Layers. · Classic errors: working on the locked Background layer, the Eraser, flattening early, brush hardness at 100, white painted on a mask when they meant black, saving as JPEG then reopening to edit, and the 72 against 300 dpi myth. · Beginner versus employable: bit depth chosen on purpose, sRGB for screen, layers named, the file still editable, edges that survive 100 percent zoom. Never ask for a self rating. Ask what they open Photoshop for, what they last abandoned, and their version. Then one task on their own file: select an object with Object Selection and add a layer mask. · Complete beginner: crops and uses filters, does not know what a layer mask is.
