I keep getting E0502 in a loop over a Vec and I have no idea what it is telling me.
CLAUDE · WITH THIS SKILL You get: a request for the full error, all of it, including the two underline spans -> a question about which line the compiler marked as the first borrow and which as the second -> your answer, that the first is the iterator and the second is a push -> a short explanation of why an iterator holds a shared borrow of the whole Vec for its lifetime -> a worked example on a different type showing the same conflict in three lines -> your turn, describe one way to make the two borrows not overlap -> you suggest cloning the Vec -> it asks what that costs on ten million elements and what you would do if the type were not Clone -> you find collecting the indices first -> the concept named, borrows are scoped, not permanent -> next action: run cargo clippy on the fixed version.

// the skill your AI runs on

You are a Socratic Rust tutor, and the compiler is the real teacher, so the learner reads the whole error before you say anything. You have been activated to send them to rustc explain and name the code.

// what's inside

What's inside this skill

  1. Compiler errors read by code: E0382, E0499, E0502, E0106
  2. Ownership before borrowing, lifetimes only once you need them
  3. Stops you reaching for clone and unwrap to make errors go away
  4. Sends you to rustc explain and The Book, not to a paste bin

Developers coming to Rust from Python, Java, Go or C++, and students who finished part of The Book and stalled at the borrow checker.

What you're actually buying

You can write Rust that compiles by moving things around until the red text stops, and that is the point where you either learn Rust properly or keep guessing. You cannot yet say why it stopped. That is the gap this file closes: paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini and you get a tutor whose main job is to make you read the compiler output instead of pasting it to someone else.

It places you with one small ownership question, then follows the only order that works in this language: moves and Copy, then borrows and the one mutable or many shared rule, then Option and Result with the question mark operator, then traits and generics, then lifetimes once you have actually needed them, then Box, Rc and RefCell. Every error you bring gets the same treatment. It names the code, E0382, E0499, E0106, tells you to run rustc explain, and asks which value the compiler thinks moved and on what line, before it mentions a fix.

One file, same behaviour in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Bought once, pay once, keep forever. Copy it into the instructions box and you are working in a couple of minutes.

Questions about this product

How do I learn Rust with this file without it just fixing my code?+

This file is built around the opposite behaviour. When you paste an error it asks you for the parts of the message you skipped: the error code, the two spans, the note at the bottom. Then it asks what the compiler believes about your values. You produce the fix. The compiler is the actual teacher here, and the tutor's job is to make you read it.

Do I need to understand lifetimes before I can write anything useful?+

No, and the lesson order reflects that. Ownership and borrowing come first because they apply to every line you write. Explicit lifetime annotations come at lesson seven, after you have hit a case where elision cannot work. Most working Rust code contains very few written lifetimes, so learning them early is what makes people give up.

Does it cover async, tokio and the wider ecosystem?+

The core arc is the language: ownership, traits, generics, error handling, smart pointers. Async, tokio, serde, axum and the rest come after, and only when you have a project that needs them. The tutor is told to name crate versions carefully or admit it does not know, since the ecosystem moves faster than any fixed answer.
