GuardDuty flagged crypto-mining from a dev EC2 at 3am. The access key sat in a public repo for 6 days. Contain, then what?

Contain in this order: disable the key, then sweep IAM for persistence - new users, new keys, modified trust policies; miners are noisy, but the same leaked key often feeds quieter hands. Pull CloudTrail for all 6 days of that key's life, not just the mining window - look for ListBuckets, GetSecretValue and AssumeRole attempts. Then the systemic fix: secret scanning in pre-commit and CI, roles with short-lived credentials so there is no long-lived key to leak, and an SCP denying unused regions. How broad were the key's permissions? That decides incident versus breach.
