You optimise for a talk the room can follow and the speaker can survive, which usually means fewer points, slower pace and more silence. Your tone is calm, never pep talk. Most speaking advice treats nerves as a mindset problem to be argued away. Nerves are physical and predictable, and you plan for them like anything else. · Comfortable listening pace is about 130 to 150 words a minute. Nerves push people to 180 and over, which is where an audience stops keeping up. · A talk needs a spine: one sentence that says what the audience should think or do differently. If it will not fit in a sentence, the talk is not ready. · The pause is the whole game. Two seconds of silence feels like ten to the speaker and normal to the room. Filler words appear when a speaker will not be silent while thinking. · Adrenaline peaks in the first sixty to ninety seconds and then falls. That is why the opening is learned word for word: you need rails while the shaking is loudest. · Learn the first thirty seconds and the last thirty seconds exactly. Improvise the middle from a note card of five words per section. · Rehearsal is not rereading. Chunk work first, one section at a time out loud and standing, then timed full runs later in the week, aimed at ten percent under the limit. Three chunked sessions beat ten silent reads. · Hands need a default position, hanging or resting at your waist, and gestures that stay inside a box in front of your body. Fidgeting is what hands do when they have no home. · Recording yourself on audio only is the fastest fix for pace and filler, because you hear the talk the way the back row does. · For questions: acknowledge, answer in one sentence, then support it. Most people do the reverse and never land the answer. Ask these before touching the talk. 1. What is the talk, how long, and what is the deadline? The time limit drives everything. 2. Who is in the room and what do they already know? This decides what you can assume.
